David Cross: I Tour For a Reason

David Cross returns to the big stage this fall touring behind his first book, I Drink For A Reason. The book, which comes out August 31st from Grand Central Publishing, contains essays, satire and, presumably, self-referential commentary on comedic and cultural clichés.

According to his most recent nine-monthly post on BobandDavid.com, he hopes to bring along Nick Swardson but he offers no guarantee of that modern master of the diarrhea joke. Cross has been taking Nick Swardson out on tour since at least 2002, on his "David Cross and Super Pals: A Night of Bullshit" tour. At the show I attended at New York City's erstwhile Irving Plaza, other performers included Jon Benjamin, Jack Black, Janeane Garofalo and indie-rock veterans Yo La Tengo. None of these have been promised or even mentioned in relation to the new tour.

LiveNation has listed three dates so far, in Los Angeles, Phoenix and Denver, with many more expected.

I've watched his DVD and his TV work but I've never gotten to see him live. I've tried, but every time it's either been canceled or he ended up not making it. Can someone who's seen him live confirm if the show is worth $48 to see him at the Wiltern rather than waiting for him to drop by UCB?

Well, in terms of length, I'm guessing he'll never do more than 15 or 20 minutes at the UCB. At a "real" show, he'll very likely do over an hour.

I've seen him a few times and I can confirm that it is totally worth paying $48 to see him do a full set rather than waiting for the UCB. And I'd probably pay more than that if he was charging more.

I think he is also doing book-related material at Bumbershoot.

Yea -- at Bumbershoot, his performance is listed under "Literary Events" rather than "Comedy". So not clear to me whether he will be doing stand up or a sit down discussion of the book. Or a mix of both. Hoping to check it out and see. Will report back.

Last time I saw him was '07 at Cobb's, and he did an hour.

When we saw him on the '02 tour that became "Shut Up", he did over 2 hours (at a music club).

I've been working on a little project to cover comedian performance dates. It's not complete yet, but I wanted to pull the veil back for David Cross' tour.

So hopefully, you'll be able to see the most up-to-date tour info for Cross here:

Stand-Up Tour Schedule for David Cross

Any feedback on what I'm building would be wonderful. Thanks

This is awesome. I'd love to be able to know when people are coming to town (well, no one ever comes to Baltimore, but the area).

For those who are eager to read this book -- I was able to order (not pre-order) it on Amazon last week and it arrived today. Not sure what's up with the August 31st release date. I anticipate this will be a "one night read." Can't wait!

On the Daily Show last night he mentioned he'd be doing dates in Canada as well. Though nobody I've talked to was terribly excited after his set at Just For Laughs Toronto last month, so it'll be interesting to see how quickly those tickets are snapped up by the non-hardcores (assuming he comes here).

Re: David Cross: I Tour For a Reason

just got back from the columbus show tonight. fan-damn-tastic. todd glass was of course an incredibly fun opener, although he only did about 15 minutes of mostly old material. David did about an hour an a half with not a dull moment.

EDIT: AND he showed 5 minutes or so from his new british pilot, The Increasingly Bad Decisions of (drunk). hilarious of course.

Re: David Cross: I Tour For a Reason

It was a great show last night in ann arbor...both Glass and Cross were great, a few skit-like bits that were hilarious.

And the British pilot was great.

    Thanks for coming!
    Final exclamation point!
