Thread: Wrong

    Wrong

This is a place for things that are just plain wrong.

I don't like it, it shouldn't exist. It makes my skin crawl, yet I felt the need to share.

I vote for any of those Truth Commercials on tv. They make me want to start smoking to spite them.

Aren't those funded by the cigarette companies?

If so, they're brilliant, because they fulfill their legal obligation to make anti-tobacco ads, but are done so cleverly that anyone who doesn't immediately relate to the pompous, college-aged 'protesters' in the ad (who are purposely made to be hateable jerks hassling people on their way to work) will equate not smoking with being just like them.

It is an impressive answer to the question, "How do you sell a product that everyone knows will kill you?" Answer: Convince people that everyone already knows that it's dangerous, and the only people protesting it are the kind of joy-less hippie douchebags that hound you to sign a boycott of Whole Foods because they have a meat section. And you don't want to be like them, do you?

    So smoke up!

This is too clever by a half. Research has found that The Truth ads were definitely effective. Unlike, say, a 30something curmudgeon looking back at what his idealized teenage self would have liked or hated, actual teenagers responded to the slightly older, kinda hip teens and twenty-somethings in the ads. If I were to guess, it was because the primary focus was a full frontal attack on tobacco companies as evil, rather than on smoking itself as dangerous.

The foundation behind The Truth gets money from the tobacco companies, but indirectly. The money is spent by an independent foundation that was created as part of a settlement. Feel free to hate the Truth commercials, a lot of people do, but they were definitely not the intentionally ineffective ads parodied by Christopher Buckley in Thank You For Smoking.

Also, I can't help but notice how cool that baby is.

See I always thought it was weird that they focus so much on "man those executives in the 70s sure were jerks." Who gives a shit? The point is that cigarettes make you die. Shows what I know, I guess.

Kids these days are self-destructive, but conscientious.

The research firm of Schmillip/Schmorris, no doubt...

Anyway, I've been told by Jenny that Chiquita Banana/MoveOn.org is behind this all somehow.

    Theme A: FIGHT THE POWER!

Theme B: I'm your elder and I've given this a lot of thought and I think you should know how harmful this is. Trust me, instead of all of the cool kids who are smoking!
