Thread: Barry/Mirman In-flight Q&A

    Barry/Mirman In-flight Q&A

I'm sitting next to Eugene Mirman on a Virgin America flight to San Francisco. He discovered that we have internet access on the plane. We are taking questions for the duration of the flight.

Will the Crazy Dogggz appear on screen in season 2 of Flight of the Conchords?

IN-FLIGHT REPLY: Just briefly in the first episode.

    For Eugene:
What are you looking forward to more in February: Delocated premiering or your book being released?

I can't wait for Delocated, but I worked on my book for several years and I'm thrilled that it's finally done and coming out.

1.What does the moniker of "alternative comedy" mean to both of you?

    2. What do see for the immediate future of stand up?

    3. Which of you would win in a sword duel on top of a mountain?

Who is the scariest person on the plane?

There's no one particularly scary or annoying on this flight. I know you expected a better answer from me, but I'm tired.

Are you still on the plane?

Todd is sleeping but I will answer your questions.

    1) I think alternative comedy is similar to "alternative music" or "modern rock" — it started as an alternative to mainstream, but eventually just became a genre. Nirvana is alternative, but also mainstream. Also, it comes from doing comedy in spaces that are alternatives to comedy clubs.

    2) I don't know. I think people will keep being insecure but promiscuous. Standup comedy is in a great place right now. Because of weird cable channels, the ability to put out albums, and the internet, it's pretty easy to make stuff and get it. But there are a lot of great people don't great stuff. And though there are also terrible people making terrible comedy, that doesn't matter. Because there's now ways for people to have niches and it's not just up to one network who succeeds.

    3) Though Todd is sleeping, I think we would both agree that I would win. He may end up disagreeing, but I am very good with a katana. Plus I can turn invisible. Watch. See I just did it! Pretty neat. I'm going back to working now. Bye bye.

    1. What's with the colored lights on your plane? Are they really that color, or did you camera go all wonky. I posted this question on Eugene's blog, but have received no answer yet (didn't realize there was an ongoing Q&A here!).

    2. I would like a meal recap. Since you have the Internet, maybe you could ask Louis CK for a recap for whatever he has recently eaten as well.

    3. How much flight time do you have left?

EDIT: I just noticed you said "Bye bye." That would seem to indicate an end to the Q&A, but I'll leave my original questions should you change your mind, or reopen the Q&A on a future flight.

    1. Yes. They have nice tinted lights on Virgin America.

    2. Eugene talked me into some ripoff upgrade, I think it's called Main Cabin Select. (to be fair, he'd never flown this airline before, and it is a really good airline). I don't think the seats better, but you get unlimited food, drink, and movies. It cost $100, so in order to make it worthwhile, you have to keep ordering food. I just ordered some Salt and Pepper Popchips and a Diet Coke. Previously I had granola and hibisicus tea.

    3. I think we're flying over Denver now. Maybe 2 hours to go.

    Thanks for the answers!

    I have one more.

In The Wrestler, what was the movie your character was watching on the computer when interrupted by Mickey Rourke's character?

I only got a brief glimpse of it, but I thought I might have spied you in the scene on the computer -- I'm not sure. Was there an inside joke of some kind?

First class or coach? Does a festival like SF Sketchfest arrange and pay for a comic's travel or are you responsible for doing that yourself?

Main Cabin Select, which is coach with amenities mentioned in the previous answer. The festival paid for the flight, but we paid for the "upgrade."

    Eugene:
Any word on the new album? I know you recorded it recently but haven't heard anything about it since.

    Todd:
Any chance you'll be coming back to Norman, OK anytime in the future? I'm pretty sure you need another picture in front of the giant cats.
