Today marks the release of Columbia Pictures' "Year One", starring Jack Black and Michael Cera. Directed by Harold Ramis (his first directing assignment since 2005's "The Ice Harvest"), scripted by Ramis and "Office" writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, and produced by Judd Apatow, the movie is a combination of Ramis's old-school, gag-heavy style of comedy and the more modern Apatow improv style (Besides Black and Cera, the movie stars, among others, Oliver Platt, David Cross, Paul Rudd, Christopher-Mintz Plasse, Hank Azaria, June Diane Raphael, Horatio Sanz, Kyle Gass, Bill Hader, Matt Besser, and Paul Scheer.)
Although currently sitting at a 21 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes , the talented cast and the seasoned hand of Ramis as a director have resulted in a movie that should be enjoyable to most ASTers. Cross is a highlight as a distraught Cain who has just killed his brother Abel ("What have I done? What am I continuing to do?") Stay tuned through the end credits to see some bloopers featuring Bill Hader, resorting to what he does best. Although not as funny as this summer's best comedy so far, "The Hangover", "Year One" is an entertaining enough diversion that establishes Black and Cera as a well-matched comedy pairing.
