Tonight: Showtime's "This American Life" Does a Stand-Up Episode

But how will it make us cry if we're too busy laughing? Well, you figure it out, when you watch it on your television. Mike Birbiglia, who's been busy with his usual schedule of nationwide tours and his one-man show "Sleepwalk With Me" as well as regularly contributing to the T.A.L. radio program, will appear, as will author Jonathan Goldstein, whom I've never heard of.

The episode, with the timely title "No Respect," airs tonight, Thursday May 28th, at 9:30 PM EST.

Jonathan Goldstein is a really funny writer and a former(?) TAL producer. His first book is called "Lenny Bruce is Dead" (it's not about Lenny Bruce), and you can probably get it for pretty cheap on Amazon. He also hosts the CBC radio show "Wiretap," which is really hilarious and features other people like David Rakoff.

Well, well, well, little did I know, this episode started with a brief showcase about the D&D Joke Center and featured AST posters and posted-abouts Kyle Kinane, Brody Stevens and Erik Charles Nielsen among others.

Are you some kind of internet comedian, Erik?

Is this an audience or a default user interface?

the director told me today that he may put the Joke Center segment on Youtube. Pretty sure he hasn't yet though.

Who was that guy in the middle segment? The radio show they described and his role sure sounded exactly like a description of the Best Show on WFMU.

So this is the requisite once-a-year time when I wish I had Showtime. Can't they be cool and put it on Netflix or the Internet or something? Just this one?

Did the show involve people calling in as characters? If so, that's Jonathan Goldstein and "Wiretap."

Yeah, Ira said he plays the straight man to a variety of odd characters who call in, or something like that. Thanks.

I can't recommend "Wiretap" highly enough. There used to be an online feed for it in America, but I think that got shut down awhile ago.

EDIT: Apparently PRI picked it up and its playing in several cities down here, including Austin (but no LA, sorry). There's also an audio archive. Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom and listen to "This One's for the Children."

"This is not the Beach Boys. It can't be. Why? No beach songs! I thought it was some kind of joke. All 'Pet Sounds' offers is the opportunity to hear Brian Wilson whine for forty minutes, backed by elevator music. There's barely any Mike Love on the album at all."
