Tonight on Comedy Central: "Tosh.0", "Onion SportsDome"

The third season of "Tosh.0" premieres tonight on Comedy Central at 10 PM ET/PT, immediately followed by the series premiere of "Onion SportsDome" at 10:30 PM ET/PT.

"Onion SportsDome" is described as a 30-minute rundown of the finest in sports news, analysis, scores, highlights, rumor-mongering and petty personal attacks. The show is co-anchored by Mark Shepard and Alex Reiser. They are joined by the venerable "Dome" crew, including senior sports insider Reggie Greengrass, who needs nine BlackBerries to hold the phone numbers of all the athletes he knows; update anchor Melissa Wells, who holds more journalism degrees than the rest of her colleagues put together; “Wish Zone” host Jay Woodworth, who makes terminally-ill children’s dreams come true as long as they are sports-related; analyst Doc Webb, who holds the SportsDome record for the number of athletes he’s referred to as “overpaid garbage;" and investigative reporter Marc Howell, who mines sports’ most tragic elements for awards and ratings gold.

The show is the first creative collaboration between Comedy Central and The Onion. In addition to hosting all “SportsDome” clips, the site OnionSportsNetwork.com will feature regular topical sports editorials and columns, Web-only video exclusives, interactive features including user polls, quizzes and blogs, and direct integration with social networks, encouraging fan connectivity. The show is executive produced by Julie Smith, Will Graham and Michele Armour.

Ugh. It's still got five minutes to go, but I think it's awful. It's like a FARK Photoshop contest somehow got a half-hour slot on Comedy Central. They have the graphics and the cadence of Sportscenter down, which is slightly amusing for about 20 seconds, but nothing funny has happened the whole show. I really hope the Onion News show on IFC isn't this bad.

I had it on for about 5 minutes, during the Arnold Pujols story. My husband, who's a total sports guy and only ever watches sports channels when left to his own devices, had no idea it was not real. He was confused, and even said, during a scene where there was an outdoor press conference supposedly in St. Louis and people weren't wearing warm coats, "SHouldn't it be colder there?"

I am hoping for bigger things from Onion News.

Tosh was amazing last night. Very funny.

But... someone explain this Antoine idiot to me.

EDIT: Aaahhhh, thank you Scammy. *sigh* That shit was just not sitting right with me. This makes complete and total sense, attitude and everything. The dude's still a douche who's 15 minutes will be up painfully soon but I can enjoy the segment now with a relieved sense. He may be insipid but at least he's making light of a bad situation rather than his sister being truly and horribly raped.

His sister wasn't raped. Some guy broke in and tried to attack her, but she beat him up and he took off.

Actually, it's quite an interesting conundrum. Without the attack on his sister, he's a dirt poor homosexual living in the Alabama projects, and in the other scenario, his sister gets scared in the middle of the night for a few minutes and he's hanging out with celebrities and doing meet and greets at malls for 5 years.

    It's actually a tough call.
Hey, check me out. I'm a ghost.

Reviews on it seem to be mixed, but I found Sportsdome really funny, and seems like it has a strong enough foundation where it could stay funny for a while. Of course, given Comedy Central's history, it will probably be canceled, so I'll just try to enjoy the next 9 episodes.

I thought it was funny, and had the style of humor of the print Onion newspaper, and I admittedly know very little about sports. I think the IFC show will probably have more room to grow, just by virtue of the fact that the premise isn't as limiting. I can see this show getting a little old after a few episodes.

I will say I am a little surprised they left in that "Who I'd Kill" segment, in light of the events of last weekend, but I guess they recorded it a while ago. Still, it's a little hard to laugh at someone saying they're going to assassinate someone right now.

It was better than expected. I am both a sports fan and an Onion fan and I enjoyed the show for the most part. The anchors are selling it a bit too much, but I liked the other segments especially "Who'd I'd Kill." They really followed the logic to its ridiculous end.

I thought "SportsDome" was better than i expected as well. (i can't stand sports) I worry that "TheOnion" style humor is too classy for a cable tv show; i just hope it won't go away too soon.

the general rule these days is to wait at least 3 news cycles since that's about as long as news remains relevant to the American public.
