Scott Aukerman and Jeff Katz to bring Comedy Death Ray to comic books

comicbookresources.com is reporting that Scott Aukerman will be bringing the Comedy Death Ray brand name to the world of comic books with the help of writer and movie producer Jeff Katz. Katz, a former VP of production at Fox who has also worked for DC and Wildstorm as a writer, recently launched American Original, a comic book publishing and film development company that plans to launch new franchises in print for eventual adaptation to film, television, video games and web series. As editor of "The Comedy Death Ray Anthology," Scott will be tasked with recruiting and overseeing both established and up-and-coming comedians to write stories for the series, the first of which could hit newsstands by the end of the year. Scott tells me he has verbal commitments from a few comedians already, and promises "the lineup will be what you've come to expect from Comedy Death-Ray - some favorites, some newcomers, some surprises!" For his part, Katz sees this as an opportunity to fill "a giant hole in the [comic book] marketplace," and hopes the CDR Anthology will become "what 'National Lampoon' was in its heyday." Look for more details in an announcement from Comic Con next month.

I hope "Jimmy Pardo: Best Detective in the Room" will be one of the comics. A dark crime tale with art by Sean Phillips, but featuring the adventures of The Shooter.

Why is this lineup the only announcement not coming out of San Diego today? Come on, somebody, don't make me go to bed hungry.

    Lineup:
David Cross, Bob Odenkirk (writing seperately), Janeane Garofalo, B.J. Novak, Paul F. Tompkins, Brian Posehn, Patton Oswalt, Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis.

Scott Aukerman and Paul Scheer were at the announcement so I assume they will write stories as well?

Sorry about the late reply, I've been taking a rape shower ever since I heard Jeff Katz speak.

    Original taps 'Ray' comics
Comedians set to contribute to the anthology
    By MARC GRASER

American Original has assembled a lineup of established comics to produce the graphic novel series "Comedy Death Ray."

Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, B.J. Novak, David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Paul Scheer and Zach Galifianakis are among some of the first to contribute to the anthology, for which each comedian will create a comicbook.

The goal is to see individual books in the "Comedy Death Ray" series, shepherded by Scott Aukerman, generate spinoffs for TV or film that would be produced by American Original.

American Original has a publishing deal with Top Cow.

The comedy project is one on a diverse slate set up by Jeff Katz, a former New Line and Fox exec who helped develop pics like "Freddy vs. Jason" and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and went on to form the new shingle to produce genre fare for multiple platforms.

The company's branding arm recently signed TNA Wrestling, a rival to World Wrestling Entertainment, and in addition to trying to build TNA into a bigger biz, one of Katz's first projects will be to adapt the sports docu "Bigger, Stronger, Faster," into a scripted feature.

Project, to be penned by the docu's helmer Chris Bell, with Jason Dolan ("Sydney Hall"), will be a "Traffic"-like exploration of performance-enhancing drugs. Katz will produce with docu producers Alex Buono and Tamsin Rawady serving as exec producers.

Signing TNA “marks my return to the business after a decade and I'm looking to make an impact by trying to grow TNA as an alternative to WWE,” Katz said.

Separately, “Book of Eli” scribe Gary Whitta is adapting Brian Lynch’s prison-based comicbook “Daybreak,” based on an idea co-developed by producer Bryan Brucks.

American Original has also inked a four-pic pact with Titmouse Animation, behind the “Afro Samurai,” new “G.I. Joe” and “Metalocalypse” animated series.

A sci-fi anthology entitled “The Galaxy Project” is also in the works. It will feature creature designs by “Alien vs. Predator” monstermakers Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff.

And American Original will soon begin producing digital comics through a relationship with Longbox, on whose board Katz sits.

This article adds Fred Armisen to the list, and reveals the unsurprising but completely awesome fact that Rob Schrab will be working on Silverman's comic: http://comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=22315
