"Reno 911!" Cancelled by Comedy Central

"Reno 911!" won't be answering emergency calls anymore. Comedy Central has canceled the mockumentary series after six seasons.

The news broke the way a lot of news tends to break these says, with a tweet. "Reno 911! was cancelled at 1:30 pm today," the show's co-creator/star Thomas Lennon wrote on his Twitter feed Thursday afternoon. "Won't be wearing the shorts again."

The sixth season of "Reno 911!" wrapped its run on July 8. The show, a parody of "Cops"-type law enforcement documentary shows, co-starred Kerri Kenney-Silver, Cedric Yarbrough, Niecy Nash and Robert Ben Garant.

Everyone pour a little of your 40 out. It had as good a run as any.

The show has been lucrative enough for Comedy Central that hopefully Lennon, Kenny, and Garant should be able to do whatever the hell they want for their next project, right? Assuming they want to stay there? Personally, I think they should try to make the move to HBO (the team, not Reno, which frankly the writing had been on the wall for already).

Sad that it had to be cut short before Roberts or Lo Truglio could really come into their own as officers, though.

In other news, did anybody else think the newest season was one of the best? I thought 4 and 5 kind of sucked.

Yeah, sometimes I try to put more of a personal touch to these news items, but when it's cut and dried like this, I do end up using a lot of the press release usually. My bad.

I did think the sixth season was very good, and I'm sad to see the show go.

"Reno 911!" star Ben Garant, a graduate of Farragut High School, tells me exclusively that the cancellation of his long-running Comedy Central series on Thursday was a "wake-up call." "To tell the truth, getting dumped by Comedy Central feels kinda like a wake-up call," he said. "If they hadn't fired us, we honestly never woulda quit. I love doing 'Reno.' It was fun. it was good. People loved it. I woulda kept doing it for years."

Garant co-created the show with Kerri Kenney-Silver and Tom Lennon. He played Deputy Travis Junior, directed episodes and had a hand in the plotting of every script of the mainly improvised show.

Lennon announced the cancellation via a tweet on Thursday.

Garant admits the show and the network did not always have a beautiful relationship.

"I feel like I was in an abusive relationship that we were never gonna walk out of, and then I got dumped. It feels (bad). The last season was the best by far, and the funnest -- and it was gonna keep getting better. But honestly -- I'm glad we're forced to move on," he said.

Garant said he and the other "Reno" stars are already planning a return to television with another network. Garant was displeased with how Comedy Central promoted "Reno" in recent years.

Despite everything, news of the cancellation was also sad for Garant.

"We had a great run on 'Reno' -- 87 episodes and a movie. Not too shabby. I do feel bad for the fans. They feel gypped. They're expressing that already, but -- our next show is gonna be better, and it's gonna have a lot of the same faces from 'Reno.' The 'Reno' family will live. In the TV.

The cancellation has also changed Garant's view of doing television. If anything, he is now determined to do another series, though his screenwriting career for movies is much more profitable.

"To tell the truth, I was thinking that 'Reno' was gonna be my last TV show. We were all thinking that. Movies are very, very good to me; What do I need TV for? But, no. Getting fired in a kinda crappy way makes me wanna do another show. What's that Squeeze song? 'Now knowing I am single They'll be fire in my eyes.' We're gonna do a new show."

    "ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!"

    edit: i guess not

"In his first three high school years, Garnett played for Mauldin High School. However, during the summer prior to his senior year of high school, Kevin was in the general vicinity of a fight between black and white students. Although not directly involved, Garnett was arrested. Due to the racially charged incident and fearful of being a target, Garnett decided to leave Mauldin. He transferred to Farragut Career Academy in Chicago, Illinois."
