Paul F. Tompkins to Record DVD/Comedy Central Special

Great news! AST's reigning King of Comedy Paul F. Tompkins will record a one-hour stand-up DVD and Comedy Central Special July 30-August 2 at the Laughing Skull in Atlanta. Paul revealed to us that the material "will be the more intimate storytelling stuff I've been doing for the last couple of years."

No projected release or air dates were announced, but tickets are available for the shows at the Little Skull's web site.

Any ASTers from the South planning on going? (not sure how many of us there are)

Congrats, Paul! One request: Please, please do the turpentine bar joke for the special. I was laughing so hard I was crying in the audience at the Lewis Black and Friends Comedy Festival at UNC, as were several people around me. I'd love to have that in recording.

If you're talking about the story from (Dirty) Frank's, track down "Driven to Drink," Paul's HBO special from long ago. It's on there. If not, nevermind.

They're not! They were almost assuredly talking about his stuff about how people from New York can't help comparing what is going on wherever they are with what would be going on if they were in New York. "What time is it? 3 AM? In New York, we'd be out drinking turpentine right now! I know a turpentine bar..." etc etc

Oh, of course. I was thinking maybe the description of the flavor of the rag squeezings included turpentine. Like I said, nevermind.

It's probably worth mentioning that The Laughing Skull Lounge is TINY. I think capacity is around 65 people.

I can't recall ever seeing any Comedy Central specials filmed in that small of a venue.

Why is it even in Atlanta? Does PFT have some roots there or did CC just pick it?

I think PFT picked it. The room is really cool, and he was there a few weeks back scoping it out. He did a guest set before Doug Benson.

What Cam said. Here's Paul's tweet from June 13:

I am indeed in Atlanta right now, checking out The Laughing Skull for a potential DVD recording. Gonna see Greg Proops's second show!

Probably even less capacity if there's going to be cameras in the room. 8 shows though, thurs-sunday. Proper dress should be encouraged!!

Ithaca to Atlanta would make a pretty great road trip (I'm driving from Charlotte to Ithaca for the 4th of July).

Has there been any further news about the release for the album he taped in Chicago in March? He did the New York Guy turpentine/unraveling a mummy stuff there!

I'd definitely love to go to this, it all depends on if I have money for both this and the Flaming Lips.
