Thread: Part 1 of the Raaaaaaaandy documentary is up!

Part 1 of the Raaaaaaaandy documentary is up!

For anyone suspecting that the marketing campaign for Funny People might end up being funnier than the movie, here's more evidence: Part 1 of the much-anticipated "Raaaaaaaandy" documentary directed by Jason Woliner (Human Giant, Patton Oswalt's upcoming "My Weakness Is Strong"). As explained previously, "Randy" is a character Aziz Ansari created for the film and performed as frequently over the past year. Not to disparage the American movie-going public, but does anyone else get the feeling that "Raaaaaaaandy" is a) going to be mistaken for an actual comedian, and b) become hugely popular? Get ready to start selling that merch for real, guys.

I really should start living my life by those three rules that DJ Ol' Yungin laid out.

This definitely gets me more hyped for the movie than the actual trailer.

    (Randy's ideas are the best)

Yeah, Aziz is pretty consistently hillarious, as usual.

This video is so goddamn funny. How is it that you NEVER disappoint your audience, Mr. Ansari?

Also, I've been noticing alot of people in comment sections for Randy videos drawing a comparison between Randy and Dane Cook, implying that Aziz is making a subtle jab at him and his style of comedy (all flavor, no substance).

Personally I don't think he is trying to skewer Cook directly, but rather all vain, uber-mainstream, self aggrandizing comedians.

Anyway, I think if you just give in to the ridiculousness of Randy and pretend he's a real comedian, most of his material is funnier and more clever at face value than Cook's.

Yeah the trailer and the other promo material should meet each other some time. It feels like once set of promos is aimed right at the Dane Cook crowd without irony, another set with a wink for the Alt crowd and the trailer for couples.

Nothing wrong with aiming at different markets, hope it works.

Andrew Dice Clay? I can't think of anyone else.

It's not a completely straight-on satire of Dane Cook, though it certainly has elements. It stands on its own.

I liked the video a lot.

Ifigured it was mocking the whole Def Jam/BET stand up persona more than Dane Cook. Then again his entire set isn't about the difference between black and white people, so I may be waaaaay off. Fuck, Raaaandyism is surprise attacking my 'a' key.

It seems like his persona is based on def jam comics, but I think the inspiration for his egotistical "fuck tales" come from Dane Cook. Also the merchandising part smacked of Dane Cook.

Is it wrong to think Randy is pretty fuckin hilarious regardless of any potential satire?

Part 2 of the RAAAAAAAANDY doc is up.

Good stuff, and the Dane Cook parallels are a little more pronounced in this one.

(Also, it is fun to notice the differences between this version and the rough cut that Aziz showed at CDR a few weeks ago. From what I remember, there is some more footage that's now in the tour section)

Good stuff. Who's the third "And these guys" comic? (The one who's not Jarrett or Harris.)
