"MacGruber" Movie to be Filmed This Summer

Saturday Night Live cast member Will Forte confirmed last night on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" that a movie based on the SNL character 'MacGruber' will be filmed this summer, while SNL is on its summer break. The script has already been completed and was written by Forte, his SNL writing partner John Solomon, and the Lonely Island's Jorma Taccone (who often directs the 'MacGruber' segments for SNL.) The only announced cast members so far are Forte and Kristen Wiig.

This will be the first film based on an SNL sketch since 2000's "The Ladies Man" (Unless you count last year's barely-released "Harold", which was based on a short film that appeared on the show in 2004- and really, why would you?) It's also sure to be the film with the least surprising surprise ending in Hollywood history (Spoiler alert: Explosion!)

I am excited! I enjoyed The Brothers Solomon but thought it was hurt by the fact that it was written as a pilot and expanded into a film. This being a 3 minute sketch expanded into a feature length film does not make me think that it'll be the same thing, but worse because it's expanding a shorter thing. Forte's got a lot more experience now. Anywhoozle, looking forward to it!

This is going to be a full length movie? That's absurd. What would be hilarious is if they did it like the sketches, and Kristin Wiig says he has 15 seconds, but now the arguing part lasts 2 hours. Jorma Taccone's involvement insures that I'll go see it.

UPDATE! The Hollywood Reporter adds that Ryan Phillippe is in negotiations to star in the feature, with Val Kilmer in negotiations to also join the Paramount and Relativity Media production.

In the film, the legendary, much decorated MacGruber is pulled out of retirement as a monk in Ecuador by a colonel, who needs him once more to fight on behalf of his country. This time the mission involves going up against the evil Cunth, who has a nuclear warhead; the mission is personal because Cunth killed MacGruber's bride.

The movie version would see Phillippe playing Piper, an Army officer forced to pair up with a reluctant MacGruber. Kilmer would be Cunth.

When I first saw the sketches, the thing I thought the most funny (and un-SNL) about it was that the sketches were like 20 seconds long. This shoots that to shit.
