Amidst the bombast of summer blockbusters and A-list comedy vehicles, Fox is releasing a little coming-of-age movie today called "I Love You, Beth Cooper." Written by "Simpsons" alum Larry Doyle and directed by Chris Columbus, it has a solid comedic pedigree, but for AST the headline is that our friend Paul Rust stars in the film.
Paul is well known in Los Angeles comedy circles as a prolific sketch, improv and even musical performer -- in addition to writing and performing with his frequent collaborator Neil Campbell, he is a member of no less than five teams, troupes and groups: Fireball Deluxe, Last Day of School, A Kiss From Daddy, The Glass Beef (with Charlyne Yi) and Don't Stop or We'll Die (with Michael Cassady and Harris Wittels). He has performed at the UCB Theatre Los Angeles since it opened in 2005, and has made frequent appearances on Comedy Death Ray.
"I Love You, Beth Cooper" has been getting mixed reviews, but Rust has gotten more favorable treatment from critics: Roger Ebert deemed his performance "very earnest and sincere." (You can follow AST's reaction to the film in the ILUBC thread.) Paul will next be seen in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" alongside Brad Pitt, BJ Novak and Samm Levine.
Congratulations Paul!
