Doug Benson's "Smug Life" is out today

Doug Benson, king of all things pot and movies, is back to talk about his favorite subjects and joke around in his new double CD, “Smug Life,” released by Comedy Central Records today, July 3rd.

However, this time he is trying a grand social experiment. Two shows were recorded live on April 20th, 2012 at Parlor Live Comedy Club in Bellevue, WA. The first show was performed “uncooked" (i.e. unaffected by the influence of...well, you know). The second? Totally cooked! Which was the better performance? That’s for listeners to decide!

Benson has three other CDs out on Comedy Central Records: 2009's “Unbalanced Load,” 2010's “Hypocritical Oaf,” and 2011's “Potty Mouth.” Benson also continues to express his love of movies on his “Doug Loves Movies” podcast (available on iTunes and douglovesmovies.com) and his long-running live show, “The Benson Interruption,” which recently aired as a TV show on Comedy Central.

It's somehow only $3.99 for the digital version on Amazon. I don't know if that's some sort of mistake on their part or what.

Amazon sometimes does deals like that on new releases. I always check there before I buy anything on iTunes, because it's usually cheaper.

I usually buy digital albums from Amazon and it has never been this slow before. I think it's so slow for me that it has stopped; the second track hasn't moved beyond 0%.

Yeah, Amazon is not usually bad at all, but today it was crazy slow. I wonder if it was caused by the fact they were selling 20 popular albums for only 99 cents each today. Maybe so many people were downloading it just bogged everything down.

I was intrigued by the uncooked/cooked experiment so I was excited to buy the CD. I'm happy to say that I wasn't disappointed.

I've only had one listen but I probably laughed more during the cooked portion. This is not to say that uncooked wasn't funny. It seemed more structured while stoned Doug came across as more relaxed. None of this is surprising but it was a fun process. I enjoyed the concept as well as the material.

Also, it really did feel like a double album and not a double listen.
