Bob Odenkirk to direct segments for Peter Farrelly-produced sketch comedy movie

Relativity Media announced today that Peter Farrelly (of the comedy directing team the Farrelly Brothers), Brett Ratner, actress Elizabeth Banks, Bob Odenkirk and Griffin Dunne are each directing segments for a sketch comedy feature film. More directors are expected to be announced shortly. Originally set up at Overture Films, the yet-to-be-titled comedy project has a unifying storyline and is in the vein of previous sketch films like "Kentucky Fried Movie", "The Groove Tube", and "Amazon Women on the Moon". Not much more is known about the premise at this time, however.

The growing cast includes Elizabeth Banks, Gerard Butler, Kieran Culkin, Hugh Jackman, Johnny Knoxville, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz, Liev Schreiber, Sean William Scott, Tony Shalhoub, Emma Stone, Matt Walsh, Patrick Warburton, Naomi Watts, and Kate Winslet. The producers will announce additional cast members as further deals are solidified, and production will continue through late May 2010.

Peter Farrelly, Charles Wessler, GreeneStreet Films’ John Penotti and Relativity Media’s Ryan Kavanaugh are producing the project. “Relativity has been the perfect partner through the extraordinarily complicated process of putting this movie together. We are thrilled to be underway,” commented Farrelly. Farrelly and Wessler are long time collaborators, working on many of the classic Farrelly Brothers comedies including "There’s Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber".

not to shit all over this preemptively, but I don't know where else to drop this turd of a thought:

what's with HOLLYWOOD SUPERSTARS doing sketch comedy? it's bad enough that we have to suffer them on SNL, how come every other Funny or Die video has Alyssa Milano wearing wigs and Topher Grace being a googly-eyed weirdo?

my point is, i hope this movie isn't that.

This looks like it MIGHT be cool, but I think we all know why we watched Kentucky Fried over and over and over again - gratuitous boob scenes. If this thing isn't packed to the gills with boobs then I don't even know what. I'm slightly concerned with the amount of celebs involved. less celebs, more boobs.

The growing cast of boobs includes Elizabeth Banks, Chloe Moretz, Emma Stone, Patrick Warburton, Naomi Watts, and Kate Winslet. The producers will announce additional boobs as further deals are solidified, and production will continue through late Boobs 2010.

I wonder if the movie preview at the end will say "MOVIE BY BRETT RATNER!" like all of his other ones.

Ratner has spent his entire career ripping off directors who are more talented than he is, so I'm sure he can probably rip off the Zucker brothers in his segment.

Are you saying he will fall below the mark of re-inventing sketch comedy direction?

Will we have to hold the movie up to a mirror to see them?

I say we do a screening in a fun house mirror room just in case, either way, we're just swimming in a sea of boobs. WIN WIN SITUATION.

Production Weekly tweeted that Sam Rockwell and Justin Long will be redoing this for the movie:

Another tweet about the rest of the cast (John Hodgman as The Penguin, Leslie Bibb as Wonder Woman and Josh Hamilton as Superman) was deleted for some reason. I loved this way back when. I think I still have the original .mov file on one of my hard drives.

Here's some other information I've found about the movie; I'll spoiler tag it just in case you want to be surprised:

    Spoiler:

    Also:

    Spoiler:

Also, that Production Weekly twitter account gives titles for some of the other segments:

.Naomi Watts & Liev Schreiber will star in Will Graham's segment "Homeschooled," in the untitled Farrelly/Wessler comedy shorts anthology.
.Steve Baker & Damon Escott's Farrelly/Wessler segment "The Apprentice," will star Anton Yelchin. (via @australian)
.Steve Brill recently wrapped his segment titled "iBabe," in the untitled Farrelly/Wessler comedy shorts anthology.

The segment that Elizabeth Banks is directing stars Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl from Kick-Ass) as a girl getting her first period. Christopher Mintz-Plasse also stars in that segment.

This sounds very "Extreme Movie"-ish. Consider me un-psyched.

Because of the period thing? I mean it could easily be a lame shock-value sketch but it seems weird to write it off without knowing the angle. It's not like subject matter is what makes Extreme Movie a pile of shit.

I always root for anthologies. It's weird that people don't seem to like them (they do usually suck, but so does everything else) despite their short attention spans. I feel like going into a sketch comedy or horror anthology gives you better odds than a regular movie. If something is shitty...it's gonna be over soon and maybe the next bit will be better.

I'm crossing my fingers that Mike White writes one of these sketches.

Re: Bob Odenkirk to direct segments for Peter Farrelly-produced sketch comedy movie

I do like sketch comedy movies; I really liked "The Ten", but from reading about the different pieces so far it sounds like they are all kind of based on being "shocking" and outrageous, and I can't picture anything based on period humor being at all entertaining. (That's my least favorite part of "Superbad"). The one with Hugh Jackman sounds dumb too (it's under one of the spoiler boxes if you want to know more).

I guess "Kentucky Fried Movie" and "Amazon Women on the Moon" had their share of lowbrow humor, so I suppose if it's handled well there's a possibility it might be funny.
The Farrelly Bros. did make one of the best gross-out comedies of all time ("There's Something About Mary"), but they seem to have lost their touch in recent years.

James Gunn ("Slither") is directing a segment for this movie, starring Elizabeth Banks. Apparently it "heavily involves 2D animation".

Also, the IMDB page for this movie has an expanded cast list. Kristen Bell is playing Supergirl in "Robin's Big Speed Date", Jason Sudeikis is playing Batman, Leslie Bibb is Wonder Woman, Uma Thurman is Lois Lane. Other people now listed as being in this movie: Anna Faris, Kate Bosworth, Chris Pratt, Jack McBrayer, Matt Walsh, Patrick Warburton, Richard Gere. Huge cast.

Didn't you mean to say, "The always hilarious Richard Gere"? This movie sounds like it's going to be the final nail in the coffin it just prized open.

Actually, Brasky, the period sketch is about Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret. Unfortunately, the sketch is about using the book in place of a sanitary napkin.
