I saw a comedian do this joke last night that I know wasn't his. It's driving me nuts trying to figure out where it came from, so I figured I'd ask the heroes over at AST.

Not sure about the exact phrasing but it's something like:

"Only by banding together can we defeat gang violence."

Doesn't sound unique enough for anyone to make claims on it. It's an ironic play on words that doesn't warrant anyone thinking too hard about it.

That did cross my mind that it may be a "public domain" joke. I agree that it's not that clever.

But I know I heard it from a famous comic before I heard it last night.
The comic that used it last night was pretty obviously influenced by Steven Wright, Demetri Martin. These types of dry one-liner comics. I know I heard it first from one of these two, or someone like them.
