Is he a lot worse than the usual performers? I mean, he's terrible, but I don't know what kind of local comedy you were dealing with before.

PS It doesn't seem like a reason to go on unemployment if you don't have to... (Jobs are muy importante) Just my stuffy opinion...

Is this the sequel to The General's Daughter?
Garrett Gonzalez Morris (born February 1, 1937) is an American comedian and actor from New Orleans, Louisiana. He was part of the original cast of the sketch comedy program Saturday Night Live, appearing from 1975 to 1980

    I thought of a couple.

1 - Going on unemployment under false pretenses because your boss isn't as funny as you'd like him to be.

    2 - The holocaust.
Hey, check me out. I'm a ghost.

I had to bail after watching the first 2 minutes. It hurt me, deep in my soul.

Re: What's worse than a hack running a comedy club?

Very interesting thread. At first I am inclined to respond like everyone else and name something obviously worse than a bad comedian owning a comedy club... infant rape, toddlers on fire, hate crimes, darfur, the plight of the poor in this country... I could go on, we get the picture.
For most, shimmyshimmy seems to be making a mountain out of a molehill. However, it sounds like one Mr. Shim has devoted a substantial part of his life to trying to work and become a better stand-up comedian, and to see someone with liquid capital literally buy their way into being a working comic sounds disgusting. However, I would be remiss if I did not say, "tough shit," stuff like that happens everyday in every line of work.

    Points to make:
ShimShim, if your present plans are to stay in your city, do not quit the comedy club. Do not let your attitude force you out of a job. Never burn bridges. The reality is, if you have a discernible level of income right now you are very fortunate. Life gets gross, but it is important to have money to eat.

ShimmyShimShim, rather than harp on the situation, take it as an opportunity to do a little personal inventory. It sounds like if this upsets you as a comedian enough to want to walk away from the club, maybe its time to be proactive in your aspirations. Younger comics can put up with the situation because they need the stage-time. If you are truly repulsed by the situation, that might be a sign you have outgrown your comedy scene/seen(i never learned the appropriate terminology). Is it time to explore other markets or other performance venues?

Posting a video of your employer's horrible stand-up may not have been the best course of action. I think thats why people are busting your balls. BFD, he sucks, are you good? However, I get the problem and I respect the issue. ShimShimShimmy, I wish you nothing but the best of luck.

I'm not busting balls, but quitting your job and trying to go on unemployment in this economy is just wrong.

The guy does seem like a douche. The flip side is if he keeps getting up there and stepping into the shows, you'll see less customers. He won't like it, I'm sure, and will learn his lesson.

If you want to quit, then quit, but stay off the dole.

Also, it is important to disconnect the comedian from comedy club owner. What if this guy spared the club from going under? What if he puts himself in the shows, which does suck, but he is committed to running the best club possible? Bringing in the best comedians to perform so the local comics have the opportunity to work with and learn from the best. Based on the video, it is probably not the case, but I would also encourage Shim to hold off and see what definitive direction the club is going in as opposed to assumed. That takes a couple of weeks. Based on the look of the video I doubt there is going to be a huge difference between leaving the first week out of principle or the third out of practice.

Re: What's worse than a hack running a comedy club?

For most, shimmyshimmy seems to be making a mountain out of a molehill.

I'm not sure that's true. But when you post a hyperbolic question on a comedy website, it's just begging for a punch line.

When you are working under stressful circumstances, it really is a big deal. It seems to ruin your whole quality of life. You are miserable working, miserable after working, and miserable anticipating work. Sometimes, the only option is to bail out and work elsewhere. I've been in that situation a number of times. I've dropped freelance design clients because they were too difficult to work with. I've quit jobs because I didn't want to to work for a jerk.

On the other hand, sometimes it's better to stay than to quit. Bailing out might cause more stress than staying. I was in such a situation with my full time job not too long ago. I was within days of resigning and just doing full time freelance work. But after weighing the options I decided to ride it out. It occurred to me that I was essentially giving control of my career over to an asshole, and by resigning because of him, I would be shooting myself in the foot. Instead, I made a conscious decision to change how I reacted, how I spent my energy, and how I spent my time. I maximized all the ways I could continue to do my job, but minimized my dealing with The Ass. I almost had to become apathetic, but in a good way. I focus on my work, and don't worry about the personalities. One friend who works for the same organization gave me this advice: Show up and take their money. Crude, but it works.

Also, Mr. Hack's actions in no way negate the advice you have given to others. Just because some people steal doesn't mean I should stop paying for things.

After all this rambling, I'll just say that I have no clue what decision you should make. But make it out of thoughtfulness and logic for what's in your best long-term interest. You can always look for other opportunities without quitting. Just smile and do your job in the meantime.

It seems your mind on the matter is already made up. Our validation counts for little compared to what you want to do. There is a huge difference between asking a question looking for an answer and asking one with the answer already in mind.

People have to put up with all sorts of ill qualified individuals at all manner of jobs. Unless this guys seriously starts giving the axe to the qualified people, I wouldn't worry. If he wants to masturbate his own ego on stage and make a fool of himself in the process, it will lead to some type of wake up call eventually.
