Thread: Too much movement?

    Too much movement?

This was my second attempt at stand up. It didn't go well. Anyways, I know my act had many flaws. One question about it was, is it possible to move too much on stage. If I feel I do better moving around or emphasizing words or phrases frequently, is that a bad thing? Someone told me comedians that are more nonchalant or relaxed do better. Is that usually the case or not? My video

Also, I am hoping to tape every one of my future performances for studying purposes. I think it's a good idea. What do you guys think?

    Re: Too much movement?

I haven't watched your video yet (my internet is slower than Rain Man right now) but I can definitely say there's no solid rules stating that a less mobile comedian does any better than a more hyperactive one.

If you're more comfortable moving around than standing still, embrace that. In the end, you'll figure out your own answer to the question and you'll realize you were just overthinking things right now.

If I had to give any advice it would be to
    a) Memorize and rehearse your act so it flows out of you
    b) don't wear shorts on stage
    b) Stop doing comedy on the Yellow Planet of Asgardia.

My main piece of advice would be to really work out your jokes. It's fine to be loose and and it's good to seem like you're making your jokes up as you go, but especially during the whole movie bit there was way too much time transitioning from one character to the next. If you're going to do something like that it has to move quickly. I realize it's your first time and it'll get better. Just something to think about.

I really can't say how much I appreciate the comments. I am also a certified personal trainer, so, if any of you have any fitness questions, please ask and I will do my best to answer. Thank you!

My advice to you is to never loose this attitude you have. I meet 40 year old men at open-mics who do the same set every week and then want to give me tips on how to make it big. The fact that you care, that you want to get better, that you want to be your best, you already are setting yourself up for a lot of success.

    Tape? Yes. Post online? No.

When I was first starting I was giddy and posted a few videos as well, and now totally regret it. I was able to take most of them down, but a few are still floating out there that I have no control over. I shudder to think that someone stumbles upon them and judges me by them.

I haven't posted anything online in almost a year, and I'm just now getting myself comfortable with doing so again, and that's only because I'm at a point where I need one to send for bookings and such.

    Re: Too much movement?

My rule for posting videos online: nothing wrong if they're only temporay (like 2-month windows) and you're sure to delete them later. I do it for the convenience of my friends and for the added benefit of critique that many AST-ers supply.

What is the best free-form workout for the glutes?

    Re: Too much movement?

If by free form you mean free weight, I would suggest two things. I live by them. Here they are: the squat and the deadlift. When done properly, these exercise are amazing for the glutes. Most people think the deadlift is a back exercise. It is, but it also isn't. The main purpose of the deadlift is to train the posterior chain. Glutes, hamstrings, and lower back (lumbar spine.) While the deadlift is great for the back, try to NEVER round the back while doing it. If you're not feeling tension in the glutes or hammies fairly comparable to the low back, odds are you're doing it wrong. Hope that answers the question.

I am not usually so quick to jump on the "Stage Time annoyance" train but you are asking too many questions and doing too little stand up. These will answer themselves at their own pace, a pace which will be set by how often you hit the stage.

This is the best post in the history of AST. We should shut down the site. We have peaked.

Ha ha, you are a funny man. Appreciate the sarcasm. I really appreciate the help people give me, so I thought giving advice on what I know best would be a good idea. Sorry if you think it's lame. My bad, I guess?!

This all sounds like the plot of a bad Patrick Dempsey movie where he trades exercise tips for comedy advice so he can win the heart of some girl that only dates comics....
    Bob LaRitchie, Brian's Friend

I would totally go see that movie. You live and learn and then get Huggies, right?

You must be referring to The Sit-Up Comedian.

If you can post your first and second sets online you have an amazing amount of confidence. I'm afraid to post ANY stand up online (but it's there). That's more ballsy than doing the actual set. I admire you.
