Technical Comedy - Buying a Mic

    Hey AST,

I'm going to buy a microphone for stand-up events. I've scoped things out online, but I wanted to see if anyone had some keen insight or advice on the matter. We're talking quality, durability, ease of use, and probably wired but I am cordless curious.

    Graciousness.

If you're going corded, it doesn't get any better than the classic Shure SM58. There's also the GLS ES58 that is must cheaper but is supposed to be exactly the same, atleast soundwise.

I second the SM58. It sounds great for stand-up and can take a lot of abuse.

Agreed on the Shure SM58. I've used them in music, comedy and recording settings and they take a pounding and keep going. The slightly cheaper versions Shure has been producing are also pretty solid, but most come with an on/off switch and it's a huge pain when somebody else takes the mic and turns it off and keeps doing material, blissfully unaware that nobody can hear them. If you do get such a mic, for shows do yourself a favor and just get a roll of black tape and tape the switch into the "On" position.

Huh! Seems like the SM58 is... *ahem*... a Shure thing. I thank you all on behalf of the Miami stand-up scene. May you sleep soundly knowing that Cuban raft jokes will resonate with a new clarity.

I bought a yoga fx-508 mic and a behringer tube ultragain 200 preamp, along with an xlr cable to connect the mic to the preamp, and a mono-stereo cable to go from the preamp to my macbook.

I don't know if it's good but it works and was fairly cheap, just for my practice. The only problem being that preamp needs to be powered.

If I could go back and do it again I would have picked another mic that had an xlr cable to start with, and bought a ronald micro cube to output it. When I get a job, I can do that.
