Thread: Post your really good sets here.

  1. #1

Post your really good sets here.

We have the open mic experiences thread where people post early sets in their career and then quickly remove them a few days later from embarrassment (or leave them up to languish).

I thought it would also be nice to have a thread where people post sets of themselves where they thought they did a really great job. Not necessarily for feedback or criticism, but it would be useful for us to see what fellow AST'ers look like when they crush (in addition to the clips of celebrity superstar comedians we watch regularly).

Not a bad idea, actually! Here's me. Doesn't look that great but it's a good sampling of the kind of stuff I do. Be kind.

This wasn't a terrible set, and I've left it online for quite a while.

Can't promise I won't delete it at a later date, though. If I do I'll just edit this post to show a newer and better set.

This was in front of a very tough crowd at the Yuk Yuk's (now known as the Comedy MIX) in Vancouver, B.C. Please note that I'm not blaming the crowd, I'm just saying they were very tough.

I don't know why so many people open up with a joke about how they are recognizable.

Vercetti, I liked the TCAP joke, I don't think you need to say that you were in it though. I did not really think the rest of your set was that funny though.

Asr, I thought your set was mostly good. I don't think you look like a leprecaun though. You seemed to manage the crowd well, which helps.

I will put up a clip of me someday when I have a good crowd. I try to avoid them right now because they give me too much confidence in my material that I don't think is that funny yet.

Yes, I agree. I should hang it up.

People usually do recognition jokes in the beginning of their set as a way of introducing themselves and as a way to get eyes on the stage. It's served me well personally.

I don't think you should hang it up, I think like me and most other wannabe comics, you need to write a lot more. And you need to find people that will be honest and tell you what they think of your material.

I liked your comparison to punkd, I thouught it was very smart. Rework your imagining of what a TCAP/punkd hybrid would be like and you have a good joke.

I have seen hundreds of comics perform, and I have never seen any "I know, I look like..." ever kill. And it is our first line to a room of people that is already skeptical about our ability to make them laugh, so if you have something that kills, use it. Btw, I don't have a good opener either. But I'll write one eventually.

A couple of crappy road comics told me that I should open with something about my name. They thought Mayberry was a comedy goldmine. I think they are wrong and it does nothing to set the stage for anything else that I do.

Keep writing, keep going up and take some criticism from someone else. Since I brought up lamme openers, here is my video on youtube where I have a lame opener.

I am on my phone, so hopefully that link works. Rip away.

These have been performed in Pakistan (where I live and perform) so some bits might be lost in translation (language wise it's 90% english but there are some cultural references that might not carry over).

The first is a sample platter taken from the hour long special I did last year:

and this is the entirety of my recent show. It had be trying more personal story telling styles and experimenting with format in terms of not relying on callbacks and punchlines:

Right on, man. I appreciate your feedback. I actually meant the "I should hang it up" line to be playfully sarcastic and not dildoish, in the off-chance I came off like that. But I do love all feedback, good and bad and don't have a problem with criticism. I'm always writing, trying new stuff and all that. So who knows? Maybe you'll dig the next set better.

I actually liked your set. Not every joke worked but you come off as likable and natural onstage, which for a lot of people (like me) is the hard part. So nicely done.

Myq Kaplan has -- had, I guess, because it was kind of dependent on his having long hair and a beard, and he doesn't have those any more...

Anyway, Kaplan had a great joke along these lines for a long time. But it was more a subversion of the formula than anything else.
Erik Charles Nielsen is a moderately funny fellow... right?

    I can think of three, just off the top of my head;

    Tom Kenny
    Drew Carey
    Todd Glass
    Bob LaRitchie, Brian's Friend

And everyone's forgetting how great Zach Galifianakis handled that joke.

I did a great job last night, IMO. It's my 15th set.

This was a particularly good set with almost 90% new material:
