Anyone know where I can get quality stage time that isn't a bringer show? I'm going to be heading down there for an audition in January.

Boston.
badslava and gigglechick's open mic list are great places to start.
it's tough b/c there are so many bringer mics but there's still lots of opportunity to get time in nyc if you're choosy by the looks of it.
I've only been here a few weeks, but my favorite open mics so far have been the Woodshed at Legion in Brooklyn on Saturday's, and the Tuesday late night one at The People's Improv Theater. Both of those are free/not a bringer.
You also will definitely want to check the schedule at The Creek and the Cave in Long Island City. Any open mic there is going to be free and probably decent.
dsoares1- I gotta put my two cents in and say that I really dig the open mic at Eastville Comedy Club on tuesday or wednesday. But get there early if you want to perform in front of a reasonably sized crowd.
Cameron- to put a username to a face, I'm the dude who quickly introduced myself at Eastville the other day. Did you just move to NYC? What do you think so far? It was nice to meet you, see you on the mic circuit.

Eastville is on my list of first places to try. What does early mean? Their site says 30 mins early to sign up, a.k.a. 5:30 — fine by me, but is that early enough?
SeanX3- I've only ever been there on time or 5 minutes late and have consistently gone on during the last quarter of the mic.
That area is pretty cool to walk around so I'd show up 45 mins early and sort of just hang around or get a slice of pizza. I say thats what I'd do, but I havent yet, maybe this week. It fills up fast with the regulars.
And if you go on a thursday, theres a great show around the corner at 9pm at a bar called Kabin. Decently priced drinks for NYC and the show is called Comedy as a Second Language. Sean Patton co produces the show, a new favorite comic of mine.

Does the Eastville show have a cover? I don't have any material, but I do want to watch budding comics find their voice.
Yeah at Eastville you just need to buy one drink, the cheapest being 5$. So basically, 5$.
It's a one drink minimum if you want to perform — not sure what the deal is if you just want to sit and watch.
Good to meet you too. Yeah, I moved here about two months ago. It's been really good. Though sorry you had to see me that mic.
Never the owner, but I have had Sean Patton who hangs out there a lot (and has some sort of friendship/possibly roommate situation with the owner). And I recorded with James Adomian there as well.
It's a really cool place. Somewhat cheap drinks, and comedy shows running every night. And it's only one stop from Manhattan.
Yep, excited to go check it out. Must have picked up C&C owner elsewhere, so.
Looks like the snow is going to interfere with my plans to come down tonight, so I'm thinking of doing http://www.standupny.com/talent/open-mic/ on Friday—a good mic, judging by the comments at Badslava—and then Eastville next Tuesday.
So planning a trip to NYC and wondering if anyone knew the likelihood of being able to get on a list as I'm comin from out of town and avoid the 'random generation order' or 1st come/served thing as I'd be trying to do a couple mics Sunday and Monday.
Right now my short list from badslava I was considering is such.]
Sunday
Comedy Village 5pm
CB's Comedy Club 7pm
both on macdougal so quite in line. i don't mind paying for a lil time or a drink cuz i'd spend the buy at least 2 drinks usually anyways.
Monday
Eastville 6pm 8pm? Not sure what the deal with the 2 shows is... one better than the other? getting on one vs the other different? Also saw there's an early one by St. Marks at Bar82 4pm and one late at Magnet Theatre 10pm that seems geared toward a broader performer than just comics. (sketch, etc)
So any thoughts/advice/warnings whatever would be helpful. I'm hoping to email some folks and call some places and have things lined up by the end of the week.
Hey,
Comedy Village is a very nice atmosphere, at least from my experience.
Never been to CB's
Monday you can really set up to do about 30-40 minutes of stage time. Eastville is good, but sign up early. Like 2 hours should do it. Bar 82 gets you a lot of time for the 5$. Then then you could do the Drama Store at 9, finishing at the PIT at 11.
If you sign up for the early Eastville Mic, you can still do the Bar 82 mic right around the corner.
Dont worry about being out of town, the cliques are not picky. Just get there early and make sure the host knows you are there. Emailing mic hosts? Will you let me know if that works?
Enjoy NYC, maybe I'll see you out there if my strep gets sorted.
First off, why avoid the "random order" mics? That's the fairest way to do it and the way that the best mics in the city do it.
I've never done CBs or Comedy Village, but from what I've gathered to talent level at those mics is quite low (though I could be wrong). On Sundays the mic to do is at Teneleven at 8 p.m. And I have yet to do it yet, but I've heard good things about the mic at Shayz Lounge in Greenpoint.
As far as Monday at Eastville goes, I often do the 6 p.m. mic, but you have to get there around 4-5p.m. to sign up if you want to have any sort of crowd. (I know it says email to sign up, but I don't think that's the case. Though I've never tried.) If you can time it right, sign up around number 12 at Eastville around 3:45, then head down the street to Laugh Lounge and get an early spot on their 5:30 mic, then head back to Eastville to do your spot. Laugh Launge is basically known as the "Pre-Eastville Mic," and it's what I often do.
I'd also recommend doing the open mic at The Pit on Monday at 11 p.m. It's one I make sure to do every week and like it a lot.
And I know you said you are fine with drink minimums/paying for time, but if I were you I'd still try to hit the free mics instead. In general I've found the free mics have a higher level of talent. Most comics are broke, so if you are dedicated enough to get really good you are probably doing around 10 mics a week, which really adds up if you are paying $5-$6 per mic, which is why you see the better performers at the free ones.
Makes sense thanks for the feedback guys. Yah random order is fair I just have this notion in my head that I'll get down there and get stuck doing 1 mic when I could've done 3 if they'd known I was coming XD.
Sounds like I should be able to avoid that circumstance tho so good stuff. Gonna email 'em so at the very least maybe they'll place the name. I'll let ya'll know how the e-mailin thing works.
Eastville on a Friday @ 5PM is very low key. One of the dudes there tonight said you can show up at 5PM and get on no problem. In fact, there were only 6 or 7 guys there tonight. Other nights are obviously much busier but, for me, it worked out great: a nice room to bomb in.
Yes, one of the comics said I should get up there — but I figured by the time I made it up there it would be all over. Next time.
Thinking of doing that Laugh Lounge / Eastville run on Monday.
