Hey everyone,
In the last two weeks I launched a new blog about stand up theory called Premise PUNCH Tag. It was partly inspired by the intellectual discussions I have enjoyed reading on this forum. The purpose of the blog is to explore stand up theory, offer resources to comedians like open mike listings, festivals info, podcast roundups, reviews of books, etc. and also shout outs to famous and not so famous comedians.
It is my hope that over time I can build a resource for new and experienced comics, as well as offer some insights into stand up comedy as an art form for the “layman.” In the spirit of community I am hoping to invite guest posters to create articles on stand up theory that they are interested in exploring. Of course as a bonus you will be able to promote yourself as a comic, as the weekly shout out segment will be dedicated to anyone who takes the time to create a post.
Anyhow, if you have a topic you’d be interested in writing about, please drop me a line: joelbuxton22atgmail.com and I can give you more information. To get an idea of how the blog is coming together you can check it out at http://premisepunchtag.wordpress.com Mondays are theory, Wednesdays are Shout outs and Fridays are resources.
In the upcoming weeks some theory posts that will be appearing are:
-Stand-up versus salesmanship
-Stage-time and time travel
-Modular bits
-Hard consonants and the rule of 3
-William Strunk Jr. Versus Comedy
The tone is on the academic side, but I try to keep it light and a bit jokey so as not to put people to sleep.
Also feel free to comment on the posts, I am really interested in starting a dialogue on some of these topics, especially considering some of them grew out of discussions on this board.
And of course, comments and criticisms about the content, layout, etc. of the blog would also be appreciated. I am new at this and I’m sure I’ll make some mistakes.
Thanks,
Joel Buxton
