New To LA Comedy Scene. Where to go?

Hey gang. I'm a comic from the midwest moving to the LA area in a couple of weeks. Where are the best comedy spots/ open mic ect. to get my feet wet in a new scene. Recommendations? Thanks in advance.

    Brandon.

A 200 pound hispanic man will greet you at the bus stop, do EVERYTHING he says.

I know they use the metric system in May-Hee-Co, but 200 lbs. is not that much.

On Fridays Coffee Haven in Long Beach, CA. You have to call at 7:30am SHARP to get a spot until Kerry knows and likes you. At which point, you can kind of show up and he'll probably help you out.

There's a lot of open mics around the city. Your mileage will vary depending on what part of town you're living/working in and which places you can get to before the list fills up.

I suggest you check out this site: http://alanlebetkin.com/?page_id=141. The guy who runs it keeps a regularly updated, downloadable list of all the open mics in town.

Word on the street is that Coffee Haven has turned into 'I-Candy' it's still a coffee shop, just gayer (literally)... it's located in Long Beach's gay district. I haven't been there since the change, but I hear it's not as good anymore for a myriad of reasons. I'll be checking it out for myself pretty soon.

Portfolio Coffee House here in Long Beach has a pretty great open mike on Wednesdays at 8 o clock. Sign ups start at 7:45.
