How Many Pros on This Forum?

Just wondering who's doing comedy for a living and who's just doing it for fun or as a really intense and involved hobby. I'm finding myself in the second, but going into third categories. But I see people on here (Doug Benson, Kyle Kinane, and others of course) that seem to be pros. Who/where are you guys?

    I'm a sorta-'sometimes-paying-second-job'-but-really-it's-a-hobby-for-now type.

I've done gigs and gotten paid for it but I'm not making a living at this point. But I love comedy, I'm passionate about it and I've gotten praise from pros. Things are looking up.

Oh who am I kidding? I'm just doing all this to get a sitcom.

    I'm semi-professional.

I mean, it's not really possible to make any appreciable amount of money as a stand-up in Los Angeles, and I've never had any interest in touring the country incessantly, especially at the kind of places that would book a comic without any major credits. (Maybe if/when I get the name recognition to make it worthwhile financially... but I don't drive, and I don't like to be away from home for any great length of time. The former may change, the latter not so much.) I honestly don't know how touring comics get bookings in the first place... I really should know that, but as I've never been planning an imminent tour, the question hasn't come up.

But I'm around a third of the way toward supporting myself as an actor. Enough that I believe I'm on the right path, but not enough that I've considered quitting my day job any time soon. (Though of course this is the thing that can change with little or no warning.)

Of course, if the acting thing works out, that gives me a better chance of making money as a stand-up... etc., etc.

Haha. If you base it on looks I guess I'm not a pro. Pro isn't a word I'd use to describe myself yet but I make a living off comedy. For now. Things change and they change fast.

    I hear that, Hugh.

Oddly, I would consider myself a pro...yet, can hardly be said to "make my living" off comedy. (There's no way that the wonderful life I live would be possible without my wife's endless generosity. My comedy efforts would not keep us in this house.)

Stand-up, comedy classes and seminars, and working with the Seattle International Comedy Competition...this is my sole means of earning money...and has been for a few years now. Usually, I'd consider myself a "full-time professional comedian"--but this year, I've taken quite a bit of time off to help raise my little boy.

Not sure what that makes me...a bit of a gadfly, perhaps.

pg--Wish I got paid by the word for my posts here on AST. Instead, AST has simply cost me $5.--seattle

I had to file comedy earnings this year and was on tv for four and a half mins doing stand up. But I also have a full time day job because you can't pay a mortgage on New England feature money and 4 colleges a year (though it helps).

But I consider myself a comedian first, clerk at the Registry of Motor Vehicles second.

Also, there is nothing professional about Kyle Kinane. Have you seen the way this guy dresses? Clean it up, Kinane.

You're in Seattle it looks like, Trenchmc. I will put you on the list and you can see me at Laughs on New Years Week and decide for yourself what I should be called. Let's get a beer or three.

If you buy your own comedy club and book yourself and write yourself a check, would that make a professional comedian?

I make a meager living doing nothing but comedy. The part of the country I'm in -- the Midwest/Southwest -- that's possible. I live in DFW. The cost of living is cheap, there's a major hub airport, cheap flights and 5 paying clubs in town. There's 16 clubs within a 5 hour drive. There's about 20-25 within a 9 hour drive. Plus a ton of colleges, bar shows, rock club shows, etc.

I don't know what route I'd recommend to people, since I yet to make a bigger plan for myself. Obviously, LA and NY are the places to be to get well-known. But if you want out of your cubicle, fly-over country isn't all bad. The downside: no Kogi Korean BBQ trucks.
    I'm a comic. My website is mark-agee.com

I'm working to become a pro. It's my dream job. I'm sure of the hardships that await, but very excited. It's odd
