How can I find places with Open Mic nights?

How can I find places with Open Mic nights? I did a number of google searches and found a few places only to find out that the majority of them no longer have open mic nights for Comics. One of the best Comedy Clubs in the area with an open mic night every week was not even mentioned on a couple of lists I came across. I am frankly very shocked at how few comedy clubs there are in this area - heck, I live in a heavily populated area - on the edge of Fairfield and New Haven Counties in Connecticut. The good club that I found is called Joker's Wild in New Haven on Wooster Street. I hear that there may be a club in Hartford, but a lot of my research has been leading me to dead ends. I really want to practice my art.

You're only an hour from New York. Go there.

Take it from someone who used to live in Bridgeport, Connecticut is the opposite of comedy.
Hey, check me out. I'm a ghost.

First, you need to learn your craft.

That's a fair assessment. I'm hopeful that things can lead up to that.

Wow, Bridgeport Connecticut. I was born there. I live in Stratford - the next town over. I can make the trek to NY (in maybe a little over an hour), it's just that I may want a bit more confidence before I start making the investment in driving (parking in NY is expensive) or taking the Metro North Train in. The Big Apple has it's appeal, but I think I'm going to try to learn some more in New Haven and maybe Hartford for a while.

Go to that comedy club open mic, chat up some of the other comics and ask them about other spots in the area they do open mics at. It'll start to sound like that scene in "Rounders" where Damon's character decides to start playing cards again and he and Norton go nuts talking about possible games to play.

Also, when you're talking comedy don't say something as pretentious as pg13 did.

(I love ya, pg, but yeesh)

The guy has done one open mic set and he's looking to "practice his art." THAT'S pretentious.

I was just nudging his expectations back in line. I actually thought I was being nice and succinct for a change.

pg--But, call it pretentious if you'd like, vicar.--seattle

PS--John doesn't deserve the full fury of my comedian-rage...not yet anyway. He's just making his way the only way he knows how.

The realization of this as a craft that you can learn and improve upon with continued effort...versus an art which comes from a magical place of pure inspiration and gift...can only help him.

Touche, pg. But we're all pretentious in our own way, I suppose.

Is there a way to fist-bump over the internet?

Isn't is a combination of the two? Wouldn't the art half of it be the inspiration which spurs your writing and the craft part be the practical application?

Just saying. Though I agree: at the start of the process, it is far more important to understand the intricacies of the process than anything else.

The best way to find out is talking to local comics. Do some searches on myspace or whatever.

Can't we all agree that comedy is half 'craft' and half 'art'?

    It's 'CRART'...
