Here's the first of this series I wanted us to do. I thought we'd start off with my favorite comic and the comic I base much of my own stand-up on.
What I most love about Todd Barry is how he doesn't feel the need to explain his observational humor like so most other observational comics do. None of that "You know how women are like XYZ and men are like ZYX??" shit, he refuses to dumb his comedy down for the masses, and probably will never top the A-list comedians because of it.
His setups are usually so unheard of, yet so believable. Often his topics are so niche, like about particular genres of music he loves and hates. It's all so fresh.
His bits are very short, usually just 45-75 seconds long, he never ever milks a topic too long. He follows a very strict template for his jokes. It's always like a setup line, a quirky observation, the punchline, and a couple sarcastic toppers.
Even with a very monotonous joke structure and tone, he never gets boring, he's so soothing I could just listen to him for hours.
Uhhhh...He's liberal yet he's not afraid to attack the liberals. He doesn't go blue too often. He puts himself above the audience which I don't usually like but pulls it off. He's very funny.
What else? Anyone consider him your favorite? Anyone not like him?
