Toronto's Indie Comedy Hour is a powerful new contender in the city's small but burgeoning indie comedy scene. Forget corporate comedy clubs, noisy sports bars, or dingy back rooms. This show highlights the best comedians in the city, providing them with an elegant and comfortable space in which to shine.
The show's venue, No One Writes to the Colonel, is already host to the popular Toronto Mothup storytelling show as well as the Short and Sweet curated film evenings. The bar is decked out in a sophisticated yet comfortable 60s vintage decor in which to enjoy the evening's acts as well as the bar's now (in)famous Long Island Iced Tea and Mojitos.
As a hat tip to the immensely popular alt comedy scenes in major US cities like New York and LA, this show encourages the acts to come prepared to push themselves (and the audience) to fresh, new comedic heights. Whether the artistic challenge is to work on new material or try out crowd work, each comic will bring a new take on their existing routines.
Each show closes out with a musical or other special guest, followed by a short open mic showcasing up-and-comers who may be featured acts in upcoming editions of the Indie Comedy Hour. The brave souls on the Indie Comedy Hour Open Mic face a team of their fellow comics who sit comfortably in judgment on the onstage couches.
The successful first show in April included comics Bob Kerr, Amber Harper-Young, Evan Desmarais, Becky Bays and musical guest Ely Henry. Now in May, the Indie Comedy Hour is back with a fresh lineup including Dom Paré, Marco Bernardi, Shelley Kidwell, Molly Davis and musical guest Jenna Warriner.
The next edition of the Indie Comedy Hour happens Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 8pm. The show is independently booked and produced by local comic and show producer Catherine McCormick and is a Pay What You Want event.

Booking info: If you would like to be booked for a long spot on an upcoming edition of Toronto's Indie Comedy Hour, please feel free to contact me at indiecomedyto@gmail.com or via the Facebook group.
Upcoming additions to the lineup will be pulled out of the open mic performers alongside the regular bookings.
Open Mic: If you stop by to sign up please come promptly at 7:30 to sign up, and introduce yourself (even if you don't get an open mic spot). The amount of spots will vary but I will always try to let you know if you're up before the first half starts. Some lucky stragglers may get on by sticking around, provided we make up some time 'in the air' (someone runs short, etc).
The open mic includes a panel of your fellow comics and/or babes from the audience, who will sit in the onstage "lounge" and silently (or not so silently) judge you. Are you brave enough?
