Rick Shapiro - Live at DeLuxe! Monday, March 9th.

Rick Shapiro (HBO's Lucky Louie, Pootie Tang)
Chris Garcia (The Onion Comedy Series, SF Sketchfest)
Julian Vance (SF Punchline, D.I.Y. Comedy Night)
    Hosted by: Chris Thayer
    Monday, March 9th, 2009
    9PM/21+
    @ Club DeLuxe
1511 Haight St. (between Ashbury and Clayton)
$8 in advance/$10 at the door

    Rick Shapiro
is truly electrifying performer, full of venom and passion. He is a 20-year veteran of stand-up comedy, known and admired for his uncompromising honesty, piercing satire, and rapid-fire, stream-of-consciousness delivery. From the banality of consumer culture to the trials and tribulations of his own rough past, no topic is taboo. Though he is often compared to Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and Iggy Pop, Rick is in a class all his own and must be seen to be believed.

Rick has appeared in the HBO sitcom, "Lucky Louie," as the brother-in-law Jerry (this role proudly featured full frontal nudity). Rick has also been a featured performer on Conan O'Brien, Tough Crowd and Howard Stern, XM Radio: Opie and Anthony, Raw Dog and National Lampoon Radio. Rick has also performed on "Law and Order," "Deadline" "Saturday Night Live" and in the cult-classic "Pootie Tang".

Chris Garcia is one of the hottest young stand-up comics working today. Unabashed, complicated and laced with the occasional well crafted dick joke, Garcia proves that Latin experience is just as much about reading books and skateboarding as it is about neck tattoos and chorizo. His absurdist take on street and pop culture coupled with his upbringing as a first generation Cuban American have singled him out, with winning performances at the San Francisco Comedy Club Competition, the Stand Up Comedy Olympics, and the Onion's Aristocrat Awards.

Julian Vance has been a fixture on the San Francisco comedy scene since the age of 18. By 19 he was performing at all the top clubs in the bay area and by 21 had already worked with comedy heavyweight Dave Chappelle. Julian's brand of dark, opinionated comedy is juxtaposed with a youthful smile and bright-eyed personality. Now, at 22 years old, catch this rising young comedian before he is destroyed by drug addiction.

Chris Thayer is supposedly one of San Francisco's hardest-working upcoming young comics. With his self-proclaimed "unmatched ability" to generate new material, he has allegedly become a favorite of audiences and comics alike. Even at such an early point in his stand-up career, he claims to have performed at venues throughout the Bay Area. He also maintains that he has been recognized in public at least 4 times.

Re: Rick Shapiro - Live at DeLuxe! Monday, March 9th.

Two observations after seeing last night's show...

    1) Rick Shapiro is bat-shit nuts.

    2) The show may still be going on. I left at 1:00am, 2 and a half hours into Shapiro's set, and there was no sign at all that it was going to end anytime soon. At about the 1:45 mark, I thought to myself, 'Fuck you Shapiro. I'm staying until the end. I'm not going to let you win! I'll miss birthdays, family events, you name it. You're not getting the satisfaction of me skulking out leading to another 5 minute rant about whoever is leaving". Long (and I mean long) story short, point Shapiro.

Shapiro will be at Annie's Social Club tonight, and at the San Jose Improv on Wednesday night. Both are open mic shows, so come see Rick Shapiro without the 'reigns' of a paying audience holding him back! I believe he's been given 10 minutes at each of these shows. I put the over/under of 'minutes gone over' at around 312...

Thanks to everyone who came out and made last night possible, and my apologies to anyone who showed up and got turned away. There definitely will be a next time, though.

The SJ Improv show is a showcase. I'm doing 10 on it and I think Rick's doing 30-45.

Shapiro did indeed stop by Annie's Social Club last night, and did around 15 to 20 minutes. Funny guy and very friendly, although batshit insanity is still totally a possibility.
