Has anyone here taken improv classes in SF, or know someone who has? I'm thinking about taking some classes but I'm wary about throwing 300 bucks to an improv theater I've never heard of.

There is no need to pay. You can get involved with Sylvan group and do some improv for free to see if you like it. I believe they do a show In SF and one in Oakland every week.
It's either free or $5. I think as long as you know the improv rules (yes, and. No killing your scene mate) you should be good to go.
I took classes at Second City for a little while, so I know I like it, but I haven't done it in a long time, and I'd like to get back into it because I think it would be good for me, and I might even be good at it. I'd really like to do it on a consistent basis somehow, but I guess you need to be in a troupe to do that, and I'm not sure how to get in one without taking classes.
I should try that open improv thing though.
The Sylvan guys are a great group of dudes. Go check out one of their shows and talk to them.
The other improv group I know of sometimes post in this forum. The shows they put on are called They're all gonna laugh at you.
I went to Endgames (http://www.yelp.com/biz/endgames-improv-san-francisco-3) and was pleased with my experience. They're passionate about improv and model themselves off the UCB. Also I know that there's a free improv night at the Darkroom on Tuesdays, but it's sort of a drunken/stoned free-for-all. Which can be fun, I guess.
