The 2008 Cuervo Black U.S. Air Guitar National Finals - TONIGHT

his name is alex KOLL, dammit.

anyway, tonight is The 2008 Cuervo Black U.S. Air Guitar National Finals. Doors open 7:30 p.m., show 8:30 p.m. Tickets: $20. 21 or older. Grand Ballroom 1290 Sutter St., San Francisco. www.anotherplanetent.com.

Mission District resident Alex Knoll, 31, will represent the Bay Area at tonight's event. Knoll's first stage name was Shred Begley Jr., but he changed it to Awesome after local fans chanted the word during his routine.
Like every true air guitar god, Awesome has a mythical backstory: His mother was struck by lighting twice - at the moments of his conception and birth. Baby Awesome exited the womb with proper left-arm air guitar extension and rock lighting in his soul.
"You strum, you kick, you somersault," Awesome says of his performance, "and you don't stop if the stage cracks in half, the walls catch on fire or if your water breaks."

this is great! i don't have a ton of interest in it, but he's shown up in pretty sizable articles/columns in this week's Onion and SF Weekly/Guardian (I can't remember which of those two), which is... Awesome!

Awesome did not win, but he lost to his mentor, "Hot Licks" Houlahan, so I guess that's cool.
