UCB Theatre Looking for Residents of the East Village.

    Hello All,

Please take a moment to read this message from the UCB4:

The Upright Citizens Brigade is exploring an opportunity to open an additional venue in the East Village and we can use your help. If you currently reside in the East Village and would be willing to support the effort please sign the petition linked below.

The Theatre is hoping to move into the Pioneer Theatre at Avenue A and 3rd Street, next to Two Boots Pizza. While we're still a long way from making this happen the first step is to see if we can get enough support from within the community. To continue offering the same brand of comedy at the same affordable prices we'll need to get a Beer/Wine license.

If you or anyone you know live within Community Board 3 and support this effort please take a moment and sign the online petition, or stop by Two Boots this weekend and sign a live petition.

    Sign the online petition now!

Thank You and we appreciate your help and continued support,

    Matt, Matt, Amy, Ian

I'm confused about this...at first it seems like this will be a second theatre down in the Village, but by the end it seems like you guys are looking to relocate to a new space entirely.

Has Steve Gristedes finally snapped and evicted the UCB? Is that what happened?
    things are iffy.

they arent leaving 26th street, that would make zero sense. the new theatre is smaller than the current one and the ucb is more popular than ever. from what i understand, the new one will be more geared toward standup and sketch since those two are starting to take over the current theatre's schedule and taking the focus away from improv a little bit.

Oh. I like the sound of that, except, it's gonna make things difficult to get from one place to the other if you like all three types of comedy. You know, if they have shows back to back that I would normally see right after the other... Ah well.

I really hope they keep the Del Close Marathon in one location though. For the same reason above. But either way, I'm happy they're successful enough to expand!

The Del Close Marathon is already in several locations. They keep the 26th Street location open the whole time, but they have big shows at FIT and a few larger theaters around town.

This would be fantastic news. Dank or not, the UCB theater is really such a magic spot. I feel like performers perform better there and it generally has the most comfortable, well-behaved and attentive audiences and the price is always a bargain. I'd love to see that go into a place thats more for stand-up and sketch, which are my preferred mediums of comedy. I hope too that it will encourage the experiments with the form that UCB-LA has with the Interruption and Maria Bamford's crowdwork-only show and the various talk/game shows at UCB-LA will be at the UCB2-NY. I only wish that I could sign the petition, but they need residents only.

I agree completely, even down the preferred style of comedy I enjoy to watch most. UCB is one of my favorite places to watch shows. I've actually been in Chicago on tour for a few months and have been seeing shows at I/O because it has the very same vibe and shows. I totally support the expansion!!!

But for the marathon, I've gone the past two years, the other venues are minute walks away. Two Boots is much, much further away, on the other side of town. Having people jet back and forth across town is not going to be fun for a 72 hour marathon. If it was a week long event, like a festival, then it would make sense, but not for the marathon. I have a weird fascination with crowd control and large group event planning...

I'm literally on the north side of 14th street, so I can't sign it, but I'm excited for a new theatre. Hopefully they have something like Gutbucket on a weekly basis at the new theatre.

Besser, Roberts and Walsh confirmed at the DCM that UCB East (or UCBeast) it will open in early 2011. There will be a bar called the "Hot Chicks Room" which may mean that the liquor license situation has been resolved. It will be mostly stand up and the UCB at West 26th will remain below Gristedes and will continue with Improv.
