And all new stories, commentary and love from your favorite host, comedian, and back alternate for America in "Speed Run-walking"....SETH HERZOG.
Hey there in a week the Beijing Olympic games will commence. And as we have done for the last 2 of the Olympic games of the modern era. Sweet is once again launching the "Laugh Olympics". Where non performers battle it out with each in 'comedy related' events and only one will be victorious and be rewarded the gold metal (which I will forge from many chocolate bar wrappers). Its an epic battle of man and their wits. And we have all star panel of judges to make sure the right one emerges.
Personally, I love the Olympics. Always have. And Beijing is poised to show off everything that the world should be (expect for democracy or clean air, of course). I love that the Chinese are setting up 'protest pens' for the human rights protests. Nothing says 'f.u. establishment' then letting the establishment tell you where you can tell them to 'suck it' Mostly I love the personal vignettes about the athletes. Everyone came from nothing, had an accident, is battling back and has a mom dying of cancer. It never gets old. Anyway, I can't wait for the of the Sweet games to begin. For the pageantry alone!
Now here are 5 guys who have never had NBC do a montage of them working out:
REGGIE WATTS: Yes, my friends, he's back to close out the season, the man you've been telling your friends about. His comedic, absurdist, stream of consciousness rap/R&B using a 6 loop changer to create the beat, bass, the rhythm and the rhyme. He's so in demand right now flying between NY, Chicago and Seattle, selling out theaters in every city. In the last few years he's been a hit at the Edinburgh Fest for 3 years running, and a cast member of the new "Electric Company", and he just recorded his new album. If you have not seen him perform yet, do yourself a favor and find out what one of the joys of living in NY is and get down to see him do his thing!!
VICTOR VARNADO: Also back again, is man who has become a big Sweet favorite, although lately he's been the Sweet sidekick/dj of choice (and has had more on stage dance off's with me than he probably cares to admit). Everyone's favorite 'black albino', the Villiage Voice did a cover story article on him last year, detailing his rise as a performer and one man production company. He's also made his mark on TV recently appearing on NBC's "My Name is Earl" and Adult Swim's "Fat Guy Stuck in the Internet", he's also has made many memorable turns in unmemorable films, "Pluto Nash", "End of Days" and "A Guy Thing". You'll never look at albinos the same way again.
KUMAIL NANJIANI: I can hardly think of a young comedian who has made more a splash in NY, in as short of time, as this one has. Originally from Pakistan, he came to college to Iowa, and then honed his comedy chops in Chicago, where his critically acclaimed one man show "Unpronounceable" was first produced at the Lakeshore Theater and then recently here at the UCB. As you may remember, He did a filler 3 mins at my Christmas show and I've been bombarded with requests as to who he was where one can see him. I'm also not surprised that he's become a darling at Comix...and at CBS as well.
DAN WILBUR: Although it will be his first time on the Sweet stage, he's far from being a stranger to the show. A young comedian going into his senior year at Bard, he's been a big part of the Sweet family all summer. I first found him at a 'new talent' night at Comix and he was easily the best of the bunch. A true devotee to the art, he's has established a monthly show a Bard wherein he often imports great NY comedians to perform there with him. I can't wait to watch him 'bring it' on this very special show.
FRANK WHALEY: And sitting to my right this week, and anchoring my panel of judges for the 3rd "Sweet Games", is one of America's most beloved comedic actors (having appeared in 74 films and TV shows). Whether you loved him as the put upon asst in "Swimming with Sharks", the target of an assassination in "Pulp Fiction" or, like me, as the dreamer locked overnight in a Target store in "Career Oppurtunies", he always delivers and is always the highlight. He's also tried his hand at stand up performing around the city in the mid 90's and now has directed 3 features including the upcoming "NY Serenade". I guarantee you..there will be laughs.
I don't need to tell you how amazing this last show of the season show is going to be. If you know anything about good times in NY, you will bring your posse down for what will be an epic evening all around. Even if you just come for the metal ceremony at the end.
And just so everyone has a great time, I believe we are going to be capping off the number of people in the room at 100, so as not to cause too much crowding and chaos. So get there on time, or else get turned away....
Traveling with my pants all summer,
Seth Herzog
