Is Liezl taking pictures at this show (hey Liezl: are you taking pictures at this show?)? Will the world finally know the innermost secrets of the Paul F Tompkins show at Largo at The Coronet?

Yessir, I've been given permission to unveil the secrets of pft's largo show.
I also got a ridiculous fancy pants new camera to commemorate the event.

Awesome! I've wanted to show people what the PFT experience is like, but am deathly afraid of violating their "no technology that steals souls" rule.

I think it's in the photographer's code of ethics that you don't tease other photographers like that.

    What new camera you get???????

    Canon Mark 5 DII.

Artsy and others who who have been to a past show, can you tell me the format? I'm just wondering if I should be getting a wide shot from the soundbooth, or if it's safe to stay in the wings on the stage. I tend to camp in one location for the night, once I'm settled.

Re: THE PAUL F. TOMPKINS SHOW Official Update Depository

... and now the secrets of the paul f. tompkins show.

everyone waiting to go onstage, going over their notes.

Before the curtain opens, he starts off the show in character as Gary Marshall.

"The Paul F. Tompkins show... where we shove sophistication and class in your fucking face."
the curtain opens, and he sings his theme song (he has his own theme song!), which alone, makes the price of admission worth it.

"you can jerk off a muppet with these gloves.
nick kroll as fabrice fabrice offering PFT one of his furry pink gloves.

grant-lee phillips performs two numbers... one of which I think was called Older Now.

Sparhusen, the almost famous band from Sweden, performs their hit Mr. Kaninball.

"...let freedom ring... from hello 68! ...hotmail."
Surprise guest tim meadows reads off one of pft's google voice transcriptions with what sounded like The Battle Hymn of the Republic (or equally inspirational rally music) being played behind the curtain on the piano. I'm pretty sure no one else could have read this message better.

Wtih some urging from PFT, Sparhusen agrees to sing an ABBA medley. Grant-Lee Phillips and the band join in.

Closing the show with a rendition of Danny Boy.

The rest of the night found here:

All in All, a great show. Unlike anything I've seen at UCB. It's a true variety show that is only fitting for the Largo environment. There's a good mix of prepared material, music, interviews, and improv'ed banter (I know this because he was able to work off the fact that a box fell over in the sound booth, sounding like someone had been shot/fallen over from a heart attack). Everything done quite seamless.

As this is my first show, I'm not sure how much of this is the typical format, but I can say it's worth the $20/$25 to check it out.

    Til next month...

Thanks to Liezl for her typically amazing photography! Liezl, you are welcome any and every time.

And the nie review of the show is much appreciated. I have no doubt there are folks in Los Angeles who are fine to spend no more than $5 to see me once a month at Comedy Death Ray, but I always endeavor to put on a show at Largo that more than justifies spending a little extra. So I hope those thrifty people will splurge every once in a while to see me do not only stand-up but lots of other stuff in addition to stand-up, all in one night.

Just a quick elaboration on something: in honor of Black History Month, Tim Meadows was reading a Google Voice Transcript of Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech, in which both PayPal and hotmail received inadvertent shoutouts, and which also featured the sentence, "Thank you for oppression."

Re: THE PAUL F. TOMPKINS SHOW Official Update Depository

It's the 8th Anniversary of the very first

    THE PAUL F. TOMPKINS SHOW

That's right! In March of 2002, THE PAUL F. TOMPKINS SHOW made its debut at a little nightclub called Largo! It went on for a few years, and then Paul stopped doing it! He was going through some stuff! He got through that stuff! Then he started doing the show again! Then he moved to New York for a year, and couldn't do the show! Then, his job in New York got canceled, he moved back to Los Angeles! And he started doing THE PAUL F. TOMPKINS SHOW again! And now here we are!

And so, in that joyfully convoluted vein, he invites you to attend
THE PAUL F. TOMPKINS EIGHTH (OR SIXTH) ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL!

    With special guests:

    ED HELMS

    and musical guests

    THE WATKINS FAMILY

Plus, some cool surprises that are actually pretty cool!

YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS THIS ONE!
YOU WILL WANT TO BRING SOMEONE WHO HASN'T SEEN THE SHOW BEFORE AND LOOK LIKE A GENIUS!

    When: Thursday, March 25th 8:30PM
    Where: Largo at The Coronet
    366 N. La Cienega Boulevard
    West Hollywood, CA 90048
    Reservations: (310) 855-0350
    How Much: $25
    Must-Get-In List: $20 cash

If you'd like to reserve a seat without leaving a credit card over the phone-- and save $5 in the process-- write to

    PFTSHOW@GMAIL.COM

and get on the Must-Get-In List!

Include your name and the names of those in your party. You will receive a confirmation email, then you simply pay cash at the door!

Space is limited, so don't sleep on this!
Names must be received by Tuesday, March 23rd.
Must-Get-In Listers should arrive no later than 8PM to claim their seats.

    * NOTE! * If you're already on the list but can't go for some pathetic reason, let us know, and we'll remove your name from the Must-Get-In List with extreme prejudice, so someone else can get in!

Seriously. Great stuff is planned. Don't miss this.

Re: THE PAUL F. TOMPKINS SHOW Official Update Depository

Let me say, I've been to the last 3 shows, and they have all been fantastic. Tim Meadows reading the Google Voice transcription of "I Have a Dream" was a wonderfully delightful surprise. I already have my seat for the March show reserved, and if you are interested enough to click on this thread, you should reserve yours as well. Mr. Tompkins never disappoints! P.S. If you are in the LA area, you should also attend Dead Authors at the UCB. He does a mean H.G. Wells.
