Saw Jerry Seinfeld on Nov 19 at Meyerhoff Hall in Baltimore. His opener was Mario Joyner, who did standard but funny riffs on airplanes, GPS and ticket-takers at theaters. Mario did about 20 minutes, then Jerry did about 60 minutes, followed by a 10-minute Q&A encore with the audience.
This is the first time I've seen Seinfeld live. I have his "I'm Telling You" CD and several live recordings from 2009, so I had heard much of his material before. Seinfeld is still Master of his Domain - sorry, I couldn't resist that one - and I was surprised by how physical his act is. Pacing the huge stage, flapping his arms, contorting his face and, to finish one bit about cellphones, actually lying down on the stage, he accentuated whatever he was saying by doing something just as funny.
The audience - a packed hall of Seinfeld fans who, like me, paid good money to be here - gave Jerry a standing ovation at the end of his hour, and he returned for an encore. Depending on your sense of humor, this was either the high or low-point of the show. I love listening to Jerry "answer" questions from the audience, and it is my favorite part of his "I'm Telling You" CD. It is too bad that the questions at this show were so downright dumb. One woman wanted to know why the other 3 actors from "Seinfeld" (Jason, Julia & Michael) don't tour and perform with him. The entire audience groaned in unison at this question - How stupid is she?! - but Jerry had fun explaining the difference between acting and stand-up to this obviously confused woman.
Long story short: My first hour with Jerry Seinfeld was well worth the price of 2 10th row floor seats at the 7:00 pm early show. I'd like to hear from anyone who was at the 9:30 late show. Did the audience get any smarter?
