Thread: Writers Resources

    Writers Resources

There was a thread on the old board with resources for writers, including contests such as the below Warner Bros and ABC ones.

Are there any others that anyone knows of that are worthwhile?

    Thanks.

That Fox contest has its semi-finalist up. Does anyone know of any other fellowships besides the ABC/Disney one?

    Re: Writers Resources

Does anyone have any suggestions on getting short stories published? I don't even know where to begin. I'm sure someone on here has experience and can point me in the right direction. It would be much appreciated.

I haven't but I'm trying to take getting a fellowship seriously so I'm taking a screenwriting class this semester so I can write a few spec scripts and originals that when a good one comes up I'll be able to submit something.

Ps. I asked Mr. Mike Schmidt for some advice on becoming a writer and this is what he told me:
"I'm sure an internship couldn't hurt, but since I didn't go that route I have no real idea. I will tell you that getting a writers assistant position will help you immeasurably. That, and constant and consistent performing and writing. Always keep your stuff updated-you never know when someone will see you and want something tomorrow."

    Re: Writers Resources

I will also try to get into a fellowship in a few years when I'm done with school. I plan on just writing more and trying to get published more. I've only been published on my school newspaper and on a few websites, but I think the more that happens (which of course means no pay for your writing) more opportunities to get published will come up. I just got hired a month ago by a site to write for them, so I think any experience where you can say "It was my job to write and I got published for doing so" is always great. I think the internship is also a great way to do that to, because it gives you insight into how the writing works in a professional setting and gives you experience.

Also doing stand up has helped me to. Maybe it was a confidence issue, but it just made me more open to what I could write and being less devastated when someone said something bad about an article of mine that was published. It helped me take the rejection and try to make it better, which I think all writers need to have (not saying you should enjoy it), whether your trying to get published or already being published.

If you have a blog or something that helps in giving people a look into your writing. Mine isn't a blog as it is a place where I just post my essays and articles that got published. It's more of a resume blog than it is a place for my thoughts. Which helped me get my summer internship.

That's a really good idea. Just have like a resume site with all of your items. Beats sending them over to myspace (even though seeing a high friend count couldn't hurt right?).

How 'bout the wonderful On the Page screenwriting podcast?

This link will open iTunes (if you have it installed) to the subscription page.

There's a familiar person attached to this project. Hint: he is famous for his 6 month long career in open-mike comedy.

    Re: Writers Resources

Something that I think can really help develop your writing, and certainly has with mine, is working as a reader. You'll do this if you have an internship anywhere, but if you're currently outside LA/NY (as I am), you can find work through one of the various screenplay competitions who are always looking for readers. Having to consistently analyze why things do or don't work is really valuable, I think, even for garbage scripts.

Incidentally, if anyone would be interested in a sort of loose coalition of a writer's circle kind of deal, I think that would be rad. I have a few specs that friends have given positive feedback, but outside of sending them to things like scriptapalooza, not really sure how to do anything with them. So getting and giving feedback on these kind of things with likeminded ASTers... well, that'd be fine, I think.

I know I'm not really much of a poster, but I'd be up for that.

Does anyone here ever use Zhura.com?
It's a free online screenwriting program. One of the nice things about it is that you have the ability to make private groups.

    Just sayin'.

Wanted to bump this thread to see if anyone has been finding anything or heard about something that might happen "soon." For cartoonists...the Nick fellowship should be starting in Jan.
