    Wine, beer, the sauce, hooch...

    I'm starting a drinky thread.

I'm looking for recommendations for inexpensive wine for our wedding! I have no clue what's good out there. Looking for a pinot grigio and a pinot noir.

Also, any good lightish beers out there?

I don't drink that much and I have pretty limited tastes, so any help would be appreciated!

I'm not much for light beers so I cannot really speak to that but if you want something that has a bit more flavor and is a bit heavier (but not overly so) I would recommend Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. It is not the darkest tasting but they go a bit liberal with the hops. It has a nice spicy flavor with a sweet, sort of citrus aftertaste.

Three of my favorite lighter beers:

    Maudite from Unibroue
McMennamin Ruby (Raspberry beer). May be localized only to Pacific NW.
    Le Chouffe

GRL- An inexpensive Pinot Noir that I like is "Erath", Oregon 2006, yellow label, very good and in my opinion better then the 2007, I wanna say 16 dollars retail a bottle but I would assume you get a discount buying in bulk

Hahn Estates makes a great-tasting pinot noir that costs around 12 dollars a bottle, I think. I'm embarrassed to say that my wife found out about it from watching "Oprah". I'm not sure if they make a pinot grigio, though.

My favorite inexpensive wine is Yellowtail Shiraz. It's really good. I'm not sure if Yellowtail makes pinot grigio or pinot noir, but if they do, you might want to try them.

I'm with Alex Mac on Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. It's one of my favorites. I don't know if I'd describe it as "lightish", but it's definitely not heavy either. My favorite readily available light beer is Becks Light. I still can't believe it only has 64 calories a bottle. I think those Germans are lying to us.

    Congratulations on your marriage!

I'm very impressed by your beer knowledge, Scamboogah. I've never even heard of some of the ones you mentioned. Thanks for the recommendations, sir.

    DJ Sam,
One of my favorite lagers is Brooklyn Lager. Ever try that one? That brewery makes a bunch of other great beers, too, including a Chocolate Stout. I've only tried that once, but it was great.

I second the Brooklyn Lager, I usually get that if I want a lager.

This may not be the place, ironically, but Sam Adams light is pretty good.

I love everything I've ever tried from Brooklyn Brewery, and their Brewmeister, Garrett Oliver is probably the most famous brewmeister in the country.

Plus, he looks like Hayden Planetarium scientist Neil DeGrasse Tyson--

Speights Gold Medal is an ale. I should've specified either the summit lager or the dark lager made by Speights. They're both good.

Tui is an IPA, which is also referred to as amber lager. They're the same thing. Truth is, I haven't found it outside of New Zealand, so haven't actually even seen one in over 10 years. I just remember really enjoying it.

My favorite thing I've had since I moved to Chicago, even more than all the meats, is Goose Island 312 Ale. Delicious.

But crly, this is all a dead issue, because you should be serving exclusively Natty Boh.

Okay, so it's not technically the best quality beer. Sure, if you pay anymore than $3 for one at a bar you are a victim of highway robbery. But this beer pretty much sums up my college experience. I miss it so.

I mean, look at that logo! That is one fancy-ass motherfucker. He's like the Pringle's guy's cool one-eyed uncle.

For many reasons this sentence could not make less sense to me.
What was the best concert you've been to?

"Probably Sade. It was just so sexy and relaxing."

    Umlaut,
Your mention of Goose Island makes me homesick for Chicago. I once had a pint of their freshly made beer at their actual brewery/restaurant on Clybourn years ago, and next to freshly made Guinness in Dublin, I've never tasted anything better.

Thanks for the info on Garrett Oliver, Scamboogah. Now I know who to thank for all that great stuff.

This is right down the street from where I work. It's the best thing ever.

I love Boh. Sometimes at outdoor shows (like the "Pow Wow") There are guys selling it for a dollar a can. Pretty fuckin sweet. Gives you a horrible hangover, though.

I think we're going to do Newcastle Brown Ale, Yuengling Lager and Amstel Light. Our budgets are low and my fiance refers to Yuengling as "Vitamin Y" so it's very important that we have it there.

Tasting wines tonight.... we'll see what we come up with.

+1! That is an amazing Spanish beer to be sure. Everytime I go into Bevmo, no matter what else I'm picking up, at least six Estrella's are coming home with me.
