    The Walking Dead Thread

It doesn't air until late October, but this trailer has gotten me pumped enough to start a thread... because this show feels like it definitely deserves one.

I read the comics via the hardcover collections and I've been a huge fan for a while. I love everything zombie-related in general, so I've been really psyched for this show since I'd first heard it was happening. That trailer is damn fine.

I'm both excited to see this and filled with murderous envy over the fact that over a decade ago Tony Moore and I posted on the same stupid messageboard and now he's making AMC money.

I don't know what that means but shut up about it please.

I want to be excited about this, but the trailer isn't communicating how this is better than the things that have come before it. The opening is extremely reminiscent of 28 Days Later which isn't inspiring. I am not requesting that fans of the books sell it to me. I'm just hoping that there's a lot more to it than what the trailer shows, but I'll be watching to find out.

I was talking about this with some friends last night...every zombie movie comes down to the same thing at the end. You start with some people, most of them die, and when 90 minutes is up either the chopper comes or the rest of them bite it too. I haven't read the books but an open-ended series about people trying to survive in that world is definitely something that hasn't been done...all you really need for a cool show is an interesting setting and good writers. Post-zompocalypse America seems like a pretty interesting setting.

I can't wait to see this.

I'm behind by about five issues or so for the comic but I should be caught up hopefully by the end of the week.

Darabont and Kirkman made a point at Comic-Con that the show won't necessarily be beholden to the book. I forget the parallel they used, but it seems like it's going to be like the old Star Wars comics from Marvel: using the book as a foundation, going their own way, then weaving back into stories from the book when the time arises.

    Re: The Walking Dead Thread

This is the first new TV show I've been excited for in a long, long time. The trailer looks amazing, everything so far has sounded great...I almost can't believe it's happening.

October needs to get here faster.

And to those concerned about the "28 Days Later" similarity, just give it a shot (the book and the show [hopefully]) and you'll be rewarded. That opening functions as a method to implant the main character into the aftermath of the turmoil, and from there goes into all sorts of different territory.

    Re: The Walking Dead Thread

When I first started reading the book, I was also a bit miffed at how similar the protagonist's discovery of the zombies was to 28 Days Later. Very miffed. I mean, most of the details are completely different, but the "waking up some time later" conceit was soooo similar it took me a couple issues to forgive it.

That said, if you're worried about it being derivative of other zombie films and stories, I don't recall that feeling ever coming back. Robert Kirkman is a phenomenal storyteller and the series is much more about the interactions between survivors than it is about gimmicks or plot devices.

    Re: The Walking Dead Thread

When it comes down to it, The Walking Dead is more about the people surviving the zombie apocalypse then it is about the zombies. It's more sociological than it is about gore and horror. And as Keith said, the fact that there's no real ending in sight is what sets it apart - zombie movies have never been strong on endings. TWD isn't about an ending, it's just about the characters trying not to die. Every once in a while it employs zombie tropes or something that's been done before, but it never does it in a way that makes you angry or want to stop - it uses them as leapfrogs for better ideas.

AMC is the only reason I'm wanting to see this. The trailer does nothing for me other than the part that tells me it's from a Network that's cranking out quality.

This is what everyone says about every zombie movie ever. That doesn't set it apart from any of the other million zombie movies.

Except that it is a television show and will have more than 2 1/2 hours to develop characters and have the opportunity to go more in depth with their individual conflicts.

Yeah, that's pretty obvious. We get it, fanboys like what they're fans of. Especially after Rubicon's non-start start, I am skeptical. I love Zombies and I am skeptical.
