    Up (next Pixar movie)

Release Date: May 29, 2009 (Disney Digital 3-D)
Studio: Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar Animation Studios
    Director: Pete Docter, Bob Peterson
    Screenwriter: Bob Peterson
Starring: Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer, John Ratzenberger, Jordan Nagai
    Genre: Adventure, Animation, Family
Plot Summary: From the Academy AwardŽ-nominated team of director Pete Docter ("Monsters, Inc.") and co-director Bob Peterson comes "Up," a comedic adventure taking off (and lifting spirits) in summer 2009. Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. "Up" takes audiences on a thrilling journey where the unlikely pair encounter wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures. When seeking adventure next summer -- look "Up."

These remakes are getting more and more out there from the originals.

It's an arrow that looks sorta like a wiener. And it's a Russ Meyer movie so I'm allowed to be a pervert.

Sorry for not reviving this thread and starting my own like a boner! I'm reposting this, but if you guys want to just combine the threads, whatevs!

Here's an AST comedy nerd question... Voice of the talking dog? It sounds a lot like Bob Odenkirk to me.

Aww man, at first I thought this was just going to be a real-world quirkfest in which two oddballs find eachother and make friends, but this trailer blew me away.

Steampunk Blimps! Mysterious continents! Gigantic birds! It's like someone took a Doc Savage novel and replaced the Doc with an old man and a fat kid. I approve!

Brasky - The Disney Digital 3-D thing is just a distribution gimmick, right? The studio that made Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons didn't get its grubby mits on this at any point, right?

    Thanks for reposting the trailer.

As far as the dog's voice, the only theory I can come up with right now is that Bob's is one of many voices used for the collar. The first lines the dog delivers sounds nothing like him, but a few of the accents do.

I can't say I cared much for Chicken Little, but I kind of liked Meet the Robinsons. John Lasseter got involved with that once he took over Disney Animation Studios, and his fingerprints were all over it. Unfortunately, their next movie after that, "Bolt", was pretty bland and pretty much just for kids. But this looks great- a Pixar movie in 3-D, how can you complain?

    I would've preferred 4-D.

Pixar movies are great, I was just wondering what that "Disney Digital 3D" line meant in your original post. I'm hoping it means that Disney just insists on calling their new non-celluloid films Disney Digital 3D, and not that the really inferior production studio behind Bolt had anything to do with the direction or design of Up.

As far as I know this is the first Pixar movie to be planned after the Disney merger, and the first not based on an idea John Lasseter hastily sketched out 10 years ago, so I'm being hypersensitive to any perceived creative shifts.

I assume "Disney Digital 3D" is an attempt by Disney to brand their 3D digital projection technology -- in other words, it's a distribution thing, not anything to do with production. It's confusing, since computer-generated animation has at times been called both "3D" and "digital" in certain contexts, but here I think it's strictly a label for how the movie will be presented in theaters (i.e. in 3D and via digital projection). It's sort of like how when, say, "Cinderella" comes out on DVD, the ads always say, "now on Disney DVD!" As if their discs are somehow different from other studios' -- maybe they're sprinkled with pixie dust before they go out the door of the dream factory.

From what I understand, Pixar hasn't changed so much as Disney Feature Animation has since the merger (the Pixar folks are still up north, and Lasseter comes down to Burbank as needed).

Weird. I just heard about that this morning. They're bringing the zeppelin to SoCal next week, but it's permanently based in the Bay Area.

Pssh. Until they strap a thousand balloons to a real two-story home and float it over my neighborhood, they're not gettin' my $12.

(Is that what movies cost now? It's been so long...)
