    The TV Set

I just saw this yesterday. I liked it a lot. I love the Duchov in a comedy.

Jake Kasdan seems to be doing the "one for them, one for me" thing. I was a big fan of his first movie Zero Effect. He followed that with the Jack Black vehicle Orange County which was duller than the place it's named for. The TV Set preceded Walk Hard.

Anyway, Duchovny plays a writer trying to get a smart and personal pilot off the ground in the face of studio interference. The acting is excellent all around. Sigourney Weaver gives her best performance in ages as a wonderfully braindead executive. Judy Greer is great as always. Matt Besser has a brief, movie-stealing role where he walks a test audience through the absurd process they're about to participate in.

It's funny, well written and incredibly depressing. Kasdan is clearly working from experience here. It's a wonder any good shows make it to television.

I saw this on cable the other day and I liked it too, although I thought some of the satire was a little overly blatant and obvious at times. Especially the very end of the movie- they were sort of smacking you in the face with their point at the end, when a little subtlety might have been preferable. Although maybe TV executives really are that clueless.

You might have noticed that Judd Apatow was an executive producer- I'm going to assume a lot of the movie was based on his experiences making "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" (especially the latter). I did think the Matt Besser scene was very funny.
Ultimately, though, this movie seemed kind of like a TV version of "The Big Picture" (although not as well done).

I liked "Orange County" too. And "Walk Hard". However, I thought "Zero Effect" was a real snoozefest.

I couldn't agree more. I kept giving it a chance and it just lulled me into a coma.

Man Zero Effect is awesome. Pretty much the only time Bill Pullman has been good

I don't know if giving Apatow so much credit is entirely fair. He probably had some input but Kasdan tried at one point to get a Zero Effect series off the ground as well

I liked Walk Hard too, I'm surprised people were so down on it

Zero Effect is awesome, love it beginning to end. Apatow is on the TV Set commentary with Kasdan and they talk alot about their TV experiences, good listen.
