So She was in this episode, but I don't see how that character could come back. Is it possible all that new companion stuff was a fakeout?

Matt Smith is extra silly. I'm definitely much more of a Tennant fan, still...but what can you do. Can't go back in time.
And I haven't liked how Moffat has used the Daleks. As created (by Terry Nation), they're a Nazi analog. The idea that they're frightened of "crazy Daleks" or that they have an assembly and a Prime Minister...or that Amy's universe reboot somehow means that the Time War never happened (thus, they're not all dead...which really removes the central motivating element of Eccleston's Doctor)...or the multicolored Subaru Outback sized Daleks...eccccchhhhh.
And going back further, before Eccleston...Daleks were properly scary. Even in "Doctorin' The Tardis"--they were scary...and danceable.
(Although...not terribly scary in the video version of the song...)

The multicolored Daleks were darling! Collect 'em all! I know they're squids in a shell, but the squids are scarier than wastebasket-dog toy-vibrator-looking fire hydrants with goofy metallic voices.
oh god... Karen Gillan... man those stockings .... and those boots...unnhhhh!
I figured you meant the very first episode you ever saw?
First episode of the rebooted series. I figured including Christopher Eccleston's name would have sufficed.
I obviously have nothing interesting to add to this conversation.
No.
I was someone who grew up with Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor (and had the scarf to prove it.) (And the perm. Don't judge, the late 70's and early 80's were a difficult time for many) I'm a huge fan of the rebooted series, to be sure, but I also enjoyed the original series.
For conversational clarity, when someone says "I watched the very first episode" and then in the same breath talks about liking Christopher Eccleston...it's important to clarify things a bit.
It would be like saying "I've been a fan of Van Halen all the way back to their first album. Sammy Hagar is such a great singer."
Picking on someone wasn't the point. If there was a point, then being the type of person unable to resist pointing out that they're not called "pig newtons" was the point.
Meanwhile, here's the first ever episode of Dr. Who.

Egg-sterminate. I see a whole line of Easter-colored pastel Daleks with candy inside.
I've been watching it on Netflix, so I naturally started with the 2005 reboot, and while I thought it was fun, I couldn't get past the fact that the show was super-cheesy. The Eccleston season had fun moments and I enjoyed if for the most part; the Tennant years started off fun, but by the end of it, I really started to find myself not caring so much about the characters or the story. Its not that I don't like David Tennant or any of the companions or anything like that. I guess it has more to do with Russel T. Davies.
I'm now on the first year of the Matt Smith era, and whoa. The show, to me at least, went to another level for me. Now I'm not very far into the first Matt Smith season, but the writing, to me, is miles ahead of the other two Doctors'. I know people give a lot of love to the David Tennant years, but this was like going from watching a fun, but mostly harmless kid's show to a Pixar movie.
I mean that first Matt Smith episode is so tightly written and does such a perfect job explaining who the Doctor is in such a concise way. I think anyone could start with Matt Smith and have no trouble at all getting into it.
I agree. I think Matt Smith is the best Doctor out of all of the Doctors. And that I base on how hot his companions are and so far two for two. Young Amy Pond and Older Amy Pond.
AlsoSpoiler:
I'm watching the first episode right now. (Yes, the actual 1963 first episode)
People don't talk much about how the Doctor has a granddaughter.

3 episodes in(to the 2005 reboot series, starring Christopher Eccleston) and I am freakin' hooked. I still think the show is cheesy as hell, but it is also charming as hell and that ends up winning out for me.
I obviously have nothing interesting to add to this conversation.

Some of my favourite episodes are written by League of Gentlemen's Mark Gatiss.
Tonight's episode was a really good example of how (almost unbearably) cheesy DW can be. Preview for the next one looks to get into the darker side that Matt Smith plays well.
This new season feels like the first season with Christopher Eccleston all over again like a reintroduction for newer fans.
