To be completely fair to Amy Phillips, she does a lot of impersonations of people I've never seen anyone else do, like Cheryl Hines and Jane Lynch . It may just have been that Scott wanted her to do Liza Minelli because he felt there was more potential for comedy there.

(a post where I call a bunch of aggressive posters dickheads in the "Sobriety." thread, because I don't feel like reading all the recent posts to make sure I grasp the context and am properly calling the right people dickheads)

(the point is, it seems like a bunch of people are being dickheads)

So is someone calling the Quran a "shitty black bible" all good in the hood these days? Just trying to get a litmus test going.

I just don't get that. Aren't most bibles black? The ones they put in hotel rooms usually are, anyway. That's why I always say: once you go black bible, you never go back...bible.

Slint, June of 44, Don Caballero (Ian Williams era), Battles (to some extent), http://www.hydrahead.com/ (to some extent), Faraquet and a handful of amazing Toronto, ON bands like Rockets Red Glare, I Can Put My Arm Back On You Can't, ETAOIN SHRDLU

Saying Maps and Atlases is Math Rock is like saying Explosions in the Sky are post-rock (see Tortoise) and saying Skrillex is dubstep (see Benga and Skream)

    Rockets Red Glare!!!

Or it's like saying that genre definitions are not entirely static and/or only inclusive of what is good and true.

Maps and Atlases is one of my favorite bands, but I'm not quite sure how Mathy they are. They're very complex, but it's still pretty much just 4/4/ and 3/4. They have some mathy elements, but "math" and "progressive" tend to get confused quite a bit. I would call them progressive indie before math rock, but that's just me. I have no idea how Explosions In The Sky isn't post-rock and Skrillex isn't dubstep, but I don't know much about either genre.

I love twinkly, progressive, indie, though (This Town Needs Guns, The Speed Of Sound In Seawater, Lana Avacada...).

Rockets Red Glare are pretty awesome, thanks for the suggestion, internet pedant.

Yeah, I know absolutely nothing about math rock, but almost everywhere on the internet at least partially classifies them as math rock (last.fm, wikipedia, etc)

That's the math rock conundrum: if you say something is math rock then it is not math rock unless it is.

The more intensely you love math rock the more you will demand it does not exist, all the while mocking anyone who would dare consider skrillex mathstep.

Re: Things you did not post

Because math is very difficult to sustain for long periods of time. As hard as it is to write a piece in 7/8, it's much harder to keep doing it for 3 minutes while remaining dynamic.

Generally, when I see the math used in reference to music, it's a qualifier for another genre. Any genre that could house Don Cab and Battles simultaneously is overly broad, so just calling them "math rock" alone doesn't cut it. M&A is mathy, but I wouldn't label them as "math rock" and then call it a day.

A band like the Dear Hunter has more alternative time signatures than most, but the music is written so naturally that it's hard to notice. No one would call them math rock, just because they're a few other genres (progressive rock, namely) that come first.

I tend to like music that gets at least 2/3 genre labels, though, and I'm not someone who gets mad when people categorize music.
