The Yankees winning is depressing but it makes sense: it's the banal evil of money and power crushing all before it. They win for the same reason the U.S. Cavalry beat the Plains Indians. The Cardinals, though...they're as awful as the Yankees in their own smug Midwestern way, but the way they win suggests a darker, more terrifying truth. Stumbling into that title w/ a .500 team in 2006, that insane run last season, that game last night...that's supernatural. It suggests that "evil" isn't just the word we give to our own petty selfishness, but a conscious force. The Yankees are Adolf Eichmann. The Cardinals are Randall fucking Flagg.

While the outcome of the ALDS was disappointing, I think in the season ending montage we will see that the Orioles are now living a comfortable life with Bunny Colvin; I don't think they will have started doing heroin and living on the streets. It's a new day.
