Anywho, I'd rather watch an ambitious movie fail spectacularly than a mediocre movie successfully go through the motions. Not that I consider ST a failure!

I agree, but to say that ST isn't a failure would make it an even bigger failure in my opinion.
If what wound up on the screen is 'exactly' the vision that Kelly had in his head, then he's a fucking crack-head. And the fact that it was supposed to be much more of a musical and have David Cross in it means that something sure the hell didn't work out as planned.
I meant that it was a success in that it was able to touch me here* and here*

Hey, I watched this tonight and it wasn't horrible! I might even like it a little! I highly recommend it if you enjoyed Donnie Darko, have 2-and-a-half hours to kill, and don't necessarily care too much about everything making sense. That said, this little guide by Salon sure did help.
I look forward to the 3.5 hour director's cut in about 2015 or so when it's finally, slowly recouped its costs and has enough of a crazy-people following to warrant a DVD rerelease.
it's way too ambitious and original to be unwatchable
and that cast. MY GOD THAT CAST.
I'm glad other people seem to find it enjoyable. Since I've seen it, I've felt oddly compelled to tell others about it.
that salon article was really great and informative too
thanks for posting it
I just saw this movie and I think I really liked it. I still need a couple days to process it all though. Regardless, everyone should probably watch it at least once in their life.
This was maybe the worst movie ever to watch after an ambitious batch of pot ramen.
I'd say the problem was that the movie is a mess. There were some awesome moments and some nice casting and good cinematography, but it added up to far less than the sum of its parts.
I don't think anyone could argue that the movie is not a mess. It most certainly is. It requires you to read comic book prequels to know what the fuck is going on. Regardless of that fact, it gets a thumbs up from me.
I've watched it sober, drunk and high off my ass, and while in no case did I find it totally watchable and sensible, at least I was intrigued and found something worth hunting for - which is way more than I can say about 99 percent of all other movies.
This movie is totally indulgently weird, and I have no idea that it's not just nonsense. But I still enjoy it.
My incredibly obvious prediction: When this movie flops Richard Kelly will not pass Go and will go directly to Director Jail.
Also, I still love Southland Tales.
edit: I write awkward sentences.
I'm of the rare opinion of not liking Donnie Darko, so I'm assuming I shouldn't even bother with this, yes?
