    Re: Sobriety.

I am probably not the best to give advice- I never started drinking as a kid and never picked it up as an adult and I never smoked a cigarette or weed in my life- but as someone who leads an actual life and has friends and does shows and lives in LA without drinking all the time or doing drugs, it IS possible to be a cool person and never do those things. So keep working and battling. JOIN THE FOLD!!!

I never started drinking, thanks to my little darling:

(picture of aenemaTron's baby, as though it were my own, with a heart drawn around it's face)

man, that's a little creepy. I better not post this

    (replaces picture with parenthetical text)

Okay, I replaced the image with parenthetical text. Next step, erasing all the actual text! Everyone knows that this is protocol!

    (pushes reply button)

wait-- oh noooooooooooo! This is the opposite of what I wanted!

    Re: Sobriety.

I'm in pixel revolts camp. Sort of. I'm not a big drinker. Never have been... and if I do decide to have a drink, I will milk that drink all night long with no shame. In the end, I just don't have the appetite for it, I'd much rather have a delicious coke.

Anyway, I do have a horror story that contributes to a big reason why I don't. A friend of mine went to jail for killing her boyfriend while drunk. She had gotten so shitfaced, that in her mind, she was sober enough to drive him home. When she dropped him off, he passed out behind the car and she ran over him. However, she didn't realize what she had done and went home. It was his parents who discovered him dead on the driveway the next morning.

Seeing your friend just fucking waste her life away due to some stupid substance is reason enough to realize you don't want any part of that.

There's no shame in not drinking, plus you're doing it for a very responsible reason and it's awesome that you recognize your situation enough to change it. Your lady is very lucky to have you.

(I will say whatever it takes if that means you make more tapes of Todd running around in the snow.)

Sorry, I didn't realize you were going full balls to the wall sober. Good luck, you can do it.

    Re: Sobriety.

Overslept 2 hours this morning, woke up with a head like a crushed easter egg and my first thought was this thread. Finished the various obligatory hangover ejecta and ordered the Sinister book from the LAPL (Strangely, they only have one copy in their system.) There's a blurb from Jen Kirkman on the back. Let's see where this leads.

Oh, and a stranger from the internet wishes you good luck, OP.

Kids Schmids. We all know that's just a ploy, and the real reason you are doing this is to be more like your role model: Me.

    Re: Sobriety.

Exercise has been a contributing factor to staying sober for me. Find an exercise that works for you, for me it's been an elliptical machine. If you ever run into a Precor AMT 100i, try it out; it's like jogging in outer space.

Something someone told me in an AA meeting has helped me during tough times. If you feel close to taking a drink, tell yourself you'll have that drink tomorrow. That's given me something to look forward too. Then, the next day I'm over whatever anxiety was making me want to drink.

Don't let yourself get hungry. I keep snacks on me at all times.

You may need to let yourself collapse into other vices. Replace booze with a lesser evil. There was a period where I ate two pints of Ben and Jerry's daily. It's not a good long term solution, but in my case it was better than drinking.

Keep us posted and I'll write some more tips as I think of them. You can do it!

Also crly, do what PFT did, try Alan Carr's Easy Way To Stop Smoking. It's available as an audiobook. I'm on my 5th month without a cigarette; so far so good.

Tim, you're going to be real glad you did this.

The best advice I can give you: Don't be afraid to drop people who treat your sobriety like a joke. It will save you a lot of time.

Yay. Now go make yourself an awesome breakfast, please.

I fully expect that when you do make babies, you will fashion some sort of saddle for Todd so he can be their primary mode of transportation.

My magic number for quitting anything, be it a substance or a behavior, is 2 weeks. The first 2 weeks are horrible, but once those are done you're basically in the clear. You'll still be tempted, but it will never be as bad as it is in those first 2 weeks.
    I'm in.

Your body chemistry is probably going nuts right now, must be very difficult. I know we're just internet people but we do care. Wish it was easier on you —*but your future self thanks you for what you're going through now.
