Thread: Screenwriting Software

    Screenwriting Software

Good day ASTers. I'm looking to purchase some screenwriting software and I was wondering if anyone in the community has any suggestions. A friend of mine uses Movie Magic, which looks fine enough, but I was hoping to explore some options before purchasing. Success stories? Any thoughts are welcome.

    Cheers

MS Word works just fine for me. All I did was memorize the shortcut keys and its not really that hard to do. Granted, I'm using it for a class and not looking at it professionally but it seems like it could work just fine.

I like Final Draft, but it's pretty much all I've used. I think I got a free copy of Movie Magic at one pt, but I never bothered testing it. I'm sure it's fine. It's pretty simple stuff, so I can't see how anyone could really fuck it up (or, conversely, make something so awesomely superior to anything else).

I'm fine with Movie Magic on a PC, although I've had problems when I installed it on my Mac (glitchy stuff like programing deciding to quit after I press enter twice).

I have used Celtx, which is free and not that bad.

If you're looking to save a few bucks, Celtx is a nice supplement. The only downside I've found is that it's "screenwriting" software, but it doesn't exactly allow for strict television script formatting. Which is strange, considering it can format a script as "Audio-Visual," "Theater," "Audio Play," "Storyboard," "Comic Book" and just plain "Text."

It would be nice if it would let me format act breaks and the like for television scripts, but I've been able to get around that, and look where it's gotten me!

I prefer using Celtx over Final Draft. It's like iSos said, they're all about the same, so don't go wasting a lot of money.

Another vote for Celtx. I have used Final Draft and if all you are looking to do is write screenplays I would use Celtx. If someone had given me a free copy of Final Draft I might have used it to start with, but I've been so happy with Celtx, I probably wouldn't switch now.

With Plotbot, you can create private screenplays to work alone or with invited friends, or you can create public screenplays to find new friends. All changes are tracked to each writer, and you can revert to prior versions at any time.
We handle all of the formatting—you just click the text to edit and write, easy as pie. All you have to think of are great ideas
