Thread: RIP Paul Newman

    RIP Paul Newman

Inarguably one of the greatest actors of all time. I can't think of many people with so many iconic performances to their name. I know he lived a long life with an endlessly impressive filmography, and that he's surely been struggling a lot with his illness, but my god is the world going to feel a lot emptier without him.

I don't think I'm the only one who couldn't help buying his spaghetti sauce just because he's so damned awesome.

Condolences to his surviving wife Joanne Woodward. She's the most beloved claim to fame of my hometown and their long happy marriage is an amazing feat in Hollywood.

    Paul Newman R.I.P.

    Paul Newman passes away.

Sad. I honestly can't think of any movies I didn't enjoy seeing him in.

Make God eat hard boiled eggs, Paul!

EDIT: Oops, sorry for the copycat thread. I think we were both posting it about the same time. Darn it.

The guy was a class act all around. The world is a better place for having him in it.

She beat one in the head, and I'm the one that got away.

    and then get an IUD.

some friends of mine in new york are working on a documentary about eugenics and were trying to get paul newman to do some narration (his daughter nell, i believe, was a part of the film). at the time i was in town hanging out with those guys, newman had fallen ill and was in the hospital and the director went with nell to visit him a few times. he said that newman, despite his situation, was gregarious, interesting, and a pleasure to be around.

r.i.p. hud, may your barbed wire soul touch us all.

    Re: RIP Paul Newman

someone on another board posted this (proported auto)biography of Newman written for playbook:
PAUL NEWMAN (Stage Manager) is probably best known for his spectacularly successful food conglomerate. In addition to giving the profits to charity, he also ran Frank Sinatra out of the spaghetti sauce business. On the downside, the spaghetti sauce is outgrossing his films. He did graduate from Kenyon College magna cum lager and in the process begat a laundry business which was the only student-run enterprise on Main Street. Yale University later awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for unknown reasons. He has won four Sports Car Club of America National Championships and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest driver (70) to win a professionally sanctioned race (24 hours of Daytona, 1995). He is married to the best actress on the planet, was number 19 on Nixon's enemy list, and purely by accident has done 51 films and four Broadway plays. He is generally considered by professionals to be the worst fisherman on the East Coast.

I just picked up the special edition Cool Hand Luke a couple weeks ago and enjoyed the hell out of it (I had only seen it once years ago). Paul Newman is awesome. My favorites include The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid and The Sting. In supporting roles, he was also really good in The Road to Perdition and Hudsucker Proxy. I'a will give him the double stitch.

HUD. Cat On a Hot Tin Roof. The Long Hot Summer. Cool Hand Luke.

For some reason all of my favorite Paul Newman movies feature him with a southern accent.

Time for a Newman movie marathon.

It's a comedy board, so it behooves me to say this: Please go rent/buy/steal-and-give-the-money-you-would-have-spent-to-a-Newman-approved-charity Slap Shot, the funniest fucking sports movie ever.

    "Let 'em know you're there!"

Never seen Slap Shot, recommended to me all the time though.

    Re: RIP Paul Newman

Slap Shot is a great sports movie that begat Major League, Bull Durham, et al. And it was written by a woman -- Nancy Dowd -- who also was involved in the writing of Ladies and Gentlemen The Fabulous Stains, which I think makes a little more interesting to watch.
What was the best concert you've been to?

-- Probably Sade. It was just so sexy and relaxing.

    Re: RIP Paul Newman

I didn't see Slap Shot until a couple of years ago, and after a lifetime of hype it kind of disappointed me. So proceed with caution if you haven't seen it yet.

are you sure you didn't see slap shot 2: breaking the ice?
because if you didn't and you saw the first slap shot then you, sir, are a monster.

    Re: RIP Paul Newman

Favorite thing about The Sting. Newman is playing cards in a train car with a couple other guys. The camera angle changes to a tight shot on a set of hands shuffling, flipping and manipulating the cards as the deck is shuffled like an old school magician. A few moments of this sleight of hand wizardy and the camera pans up to Paul Newman's grinning face and he winks into the camera. Very cool.

Anybody else choosing the watch the marathon on TCM over the NFL? Big stretch coming up: Hud, Somebody Up There Likes Me, Cool Hand Luke, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

This is the greatest sunday of all time.
