Thread: Nintendo Wii for Christmas question

    Nintendo Wii for Christmas question

I'm thinking of getting a Wii for my nieces and nephew.

    However:

    1) It seems to be out everywhere. Is there another batch being made for Christmas or should I think of something else?

    2) Is four years old too young (the youngest) for the Wii? I have no frame of reference, as in 1973, when I was four, the drinking bird was the most high tech thing I owned.

maybe i should just buy them all drinking birds.

I wouldn't give my kids videogames until they were old enough to buy them themselves. Even though I think I had an active and fun childhood I probably wasted a little under half of it playing Nintendo or Sega. Once they're hooked, they'll want a new one every 3 years (I know I did).

Granted, the Wii is about as active as a game console can get so it might not be that bad. I think giving them some kind of educational game (Leap Frog and such) will be more benefital, cheaper, and easier to get. Unless you want a Wii then by all means.

Talk to the parents and make sure that's cool with them (I imagine you already did that). Some parents might not want their kids getting in door exercise a la Wii.

Get them kites, fireworks and books about animals.

They would go nuts for it I'm sure. My friend's daughter has one and she plays it up and down (when they allow her that is).

Right now, one of the big wigs at Nintendo is saying that they are going crazy trying to make as many as they can but he's not making any promises. Keep looking though. One good place to look may be at Blockbusters or other places like that - they often times are selling them and no one knows about it.

If only there were some way for companies to predict when Christmas is going to happen.

Do they have Aahs in your area? I don't know their prices, but that place always seems to have Wiis (or the sign-flipping mascot out front always claims they do).

Four might be slightly young to appreciate the Wii, but there will be games she can mess with a bit, and she'll grow into it.

Toys R Us is another good place to look for video game stuff.

Do kids like the Leap Frog games, or is that like getting a box of raisins on Halloween?

My kids like playing the Leapster games. I don't know how beneficial they are from an educational perspective, though.

We bought the Baby Einstein videos, too, then a few years later a study indicated the videos were more of a harm than a help on learning the young folk.

As far as leapster type stuff goes I think four is nearing the top age that kids can enjoy that toy. Also, I have noticed that a kids enjoyment of leapster and the like, is proportionate to the amount of video games they are exposed to. I have a friend who's parents decided to have another child much later in life. My friend is a very very hardcore gamer and even at 2 the new kid really seemed to hate leapster because it was very lame compared to the games her brother played. However, I have also known kids who had little to no exposure to games who really really loved the leapster stuff.

As for finding wii's if you have access to costco or sam's they seem to have them there fairly often.

Get them each a skateboard, a can of Bactine, and a copy of James Joyce's Ulysses.

    What did the study say?

It said that kids who watched those videos grew up to ask dumb questions on the Internet.

Are you kiddin me with this Leapster business? And sorry, but a four year old doesn't need a Wii.

What is wrong with using the money for a Wii and just buying them boatloads of books and movies you loved as a little kid? Darn the "wow" factor.
