    Re: The NHL Thread

I hope a hockey miracle happens and the Jets and Capitals make it into the playoffs, I don;t want either of you guys on the outside looking in come mid April. And regardless of who you think is better, that goal by Ovi last night against the Hawks was sick. Between the legs to a shortside top shelf snap shot, pretty. Too bad it wasn't worth 4 goals. Now the Caps have a better chance of winning tonight....

I'll be at the game Umlat, can't remember if I've seen Ovechkin in person over the years. The way both our teams have been playing lately this could be a real snooze fest. Your team looked good last night, great pep in their step. But the Hawks are made of energy and remind me of a mid nineties Wings team, hunger and fresh legs.

All I want is a healthy roster come April 11th. If the Blues represent the Central in the Western conference finals, so be it.

    Go Wings!

    Re: The NHL Thread

Caps looked mostly like crap last night; flat-footed and couldn't generate any offense whatsoever, besides those two bright shining moments, which only served to give us some false hope .

They did look great on Friday against the Jets. I want to reiterate what a great match-up that was. Both teams played very well, and it was a very hard fought battle. Unfortunately, penalties (and non-calls) played a significant factor in the game. I'm not proud of my post from Saturday morning (thankfully buried by the page-break), but I'd be interested to see how Arch would have reacted if his team had come out the loser in such a crucial, hard-fought game, due in some part to bad officiating.

Tonight should be interesting. Wings are certainly more beatable with their injuries than they've been for most of the season. But on the other hand, the last time the Caps faced the Wings was that 7-1 beatdown at the Verizon Center in October (the last of the 7-game win streak to open the season), and I understand that hockey memories are long, and some payback may be due.

No, I was just confused. I mean, we all read the news and know that Crosby is better

..from his concussion. Good for him! What does that have to do with this game?

    How about this?

Also, how about this weird-ass motherfucker, I love this guy:

...and for those keeping track, that's 5 goals in 4 games for Ovechkin, 3 goals in the two since the "Crosby's better" chant, so now I'm very in favor of that chant happening at every game.

That opening fight is a return to form. The respect that fighting can command is what I like to see, no cheap shots, man to man.

Unlike this Sedin/Keith head shot trade off situation.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-pu...Juo8SboEJ7vLYF

Keith gone for 5 games is an advantage for the other teams in the playoff hunt in the West, like wise with Sedin out for about 2 weeks. But why did Daniel go free? No penalty call in the game so it's not reviewable by Shanahan right? I know Keith or some Hawk has to retaliate, but why do the main thing the NHL police are looking for? Oh well, see you at Goose Island!

And instead of coasting into the playoffs, my team is arriving in a wheelchair. Holy moly. It's going to be an exciting last couple of weeks here. Chicago or Nashville in the first round most likely, pick your poison. Or possibly from out of nowhere, the LA Kings. That's who I said I wanted earlier in the season, and now I guess I should stick with that wish. I think a healthy Wings team can eat up Quick, especially if the PP magically starts working, maybe they've been saving all those goals for the playoffs.

I got to see Ovechkin in person and he had 2 goals and an assist, and one good standing body check. He sure is squirrely though. He seemed to fall a bunch, is this common? Washington looked fast and hungry, the Wings haven't looked like that in a long while.

Watching the Jets/Caps game tonight. Carolina for the Wings tomorrow. Sacrifices to the Hockey Gods must be made...

    The coach needs help!

EDIT: Speak of the Devil (#8), he's going off!

What a game...you have to love the Jets "no quit" attitude. Noel calls the time out to settle the boys down then minutes later Slater dances with Laich, ignites the team and from there they didn't stop pouring it on. Outshot the Caps 17-2 in the third, Caps went 16 minutes without a shot.
Stuarts diving stick check that saved that open net goal was HUGE. If teams can shut Ovi down the caps are a manageable team to play against but holy shit did he have my ass clenched tight for that first period. Chimera's goal was nice.

With Antropov and Fehr both out with injuries it was wicked to see Machacek and Maxwell get called up and perform like they did.As far as first NHL goals go that one was a beaut!
Nashville is not going to be easy tomorrow.

    15 years ago today,

McCarty had the play of the season with this fight and then went on to have the goal of the season in game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals against Philly. 2-1, wings win in a sweep.

With the back to back losses to Nashville on Saturday and Ottawa tonight you may as well stick a fork in my beloved Jets. Barring both Buffalo AND Washington having simultaneous meltdowns for the remainder of their seasons, there's just no way I can see us getting in the top 8.
I never say die but it would take some kind of miracle.

    Re: The NHL Thread

Man, I was rooting for the Jets to beat Ottawa to give the Caps hope of actually passing Ottawa and grabbing the 7th spot. If we get in to the playoffs, I'd most love a scenario where we could face the Panthers in the first round (the thought with passing Ottawa is that Florida, with their easy as your mom schedule, could also pass Boston). I'd also be fine with taking on the Rangers (the only team we've been able to beat in the post-season in the Ovechkin era), the Sens, or the Bruins. The team I'd least like to face in the first round is probably the same as everyone else in the East -- the unstoppable Penguins. I hope they don't catch the Rangers, not just for the Caps sake, but because a first round Philly-Pitt match-up is just too good.

Oh look at this, I have firmly placed this cart before this horse. That's not right at all. Let me take a step back.

Without a doubt, the biggest game of the Caps season is tonight. Two teams on the cusp, neck-and-neck, who have been plagued by injuries to star players and long stretches of mediocre-to-terrible play. Now it all comes down to this. I feel good now that Ovechkin is back in 09-10 form for these past 10 games, but now we just need consistency from the rest of the roster. Also, we badly need to up our killer instinct and be sure to actually play a full 60 minutes. That loss to Winnipeg on Friday was really unacceptable. We were fine with taking a point out of Philly the night before after a hard fought battle and Bryz playing in top form (and Holtby failing in the shoot-out). To take a point after being up 3-0 and then surrendering 2 goals in 2 minutes (or whatever it was)? Less satisfying. That description of this team is not a team that deserves to be in the playoffs, and yet here we are. And once in the post-season, anything can happen. My hope is that the lowered expectations for the 11-12 Caps may actually serve them better than the sky high expectations they've taken into the past three playoffs. If we get in. And that should remain an "If" through the end of next week. If we have to battle to get in, are we more ready to battle to win more than one series? Or are we already too tired?

Also, this guy could be back --

Though after two months of not being able to skate, there's no way we'll have Backstrom in peak form even if he's able to join us for a possible post-season run. But his presence will make a huge impact in the room.

And whatever happens, Ovi is back. Our few losses over the past couple of weeks can hardly be pinned on him, which was not the case for a long stretch of this season. But now he is doing everything he can to get us there. I mean, just look at this:

It will be a huge blow to his ego to not make the playoffs if it happens, but hopefully it gets him more drive for next season with a fully healthy Nicky and Mike Green. Plus I just love his new celebration:

    Re: The NHL Thread

Boston it is. I feel good about our chances given how well we played against them in the regular season, and Backstrom finally rounding into form, scoring his first goal since returning from his concussion last night.

Plus, there's added ammo for heckling Tim Thomas from the Verizon Center when he's mere blocks away from our Socialist President.

Here are my picks for the first round:
    Rangers over Sens in 6
    Caps over Bruins in 6
    Devils over Panthers in 5
    Penguins over Flyers in 7
Canucks over Kings in 5 (sorry ILIS)
Blues over Sharks in 4 (sorry Darryl Duffy)
Hawks over Coyotes in 6 (sorry Jay)
Predators over Wings in 7 (sorry Jay) (you're welcome Valorie)

Best series this round will be Pens/Flyers and Preds/Wings. I'd wager the final probably ends up being either Penguins vs. Blues or Penguins vs. Canucks.

Also, not to add insult to injury, Jay, but have to give Patrick Kane credit on this ridiculous shootout winner on Saturday:
