There's so much I love about the new Zelda game but my god, what were they thinking with the endless sword-dowsing fetch quests and those frustrating and repetitive spirit trials? Were Nintendo worried they were making a game that was too good?

Don't know if you guys are up on the Humble Indie Bundles.

They get a bundle of indie games together, a couple of charities, then charge you 'what you can pay' for the lot - games and charitable donations. You can even decide how much is split between the developers, the charities, and the organization. On steam these games together would have a value of at least 50 bucks (guesstimating). And I picked up the bundle for 10 (I already owned 4 of the 7 games lol...)

This is the 4th bundle and it is really strong with a bunch of titles I would recommend you play! (I think there are mac versions of all of these games available as well)

Super Meat Boy. - Easily one of the best platformers of all time. Super challenging, but also very rewarding - even for people like me who aren't the best at platforming gameplay. think Super Mario Brothers with less cute and more yuck.

Jonestown - A steampunky shmup (shoot em up, top view shooting game a la Galaxian). It is well reviewed, though I have not played it yet to find out.

Bit Trip Runner - amazingly cute rhythm game / platformer that, like super meat boy, has addictive 'let me try that level one last time' gameplay. And a cool 4-bit look with catchy music and style.

Shank - a side scrolling beat em up with a cool look and great animations - or so I'm told, haven't tried it yet. My co-workers assure me it is a lot of fun.

Cave Story + A one man love letter to the side scrolling adventure game. All music, art, writing, game design etc by one dude. It was so well regarded that Nintendo commissioned a prettied up (hence the +) version for Wiiware - now available for PC. If you played games in the 8 / 16 bit era you will fall in love with this game, just give it a chance.

Nightsky HD - Made by the same guy who made cave story. I haven\t played it yet either but it is "an atmospheric, 2D physics puzzle platformer."

Gratuitous Space Battles - giant fleets fighting in space, low poly graphics, lots of fun if you like that kind of thing.

    Charities:
American Red Cross and Child's Play

Unfortunately you cannot pick and choose which games you would like and which you would like to gift to a friend. But at this cost you might as well just buy multiple copies.

Also: special note. When considering how to divide up your donation keep in mind that the humble bundle guys got a 7-8 million dollar venture capital deal a few months ago, so don't worry about tipping them - give some more to the other 2 camps. Just my 2 cents.

    HF!

tl,dr: great games in a bundle for cheap + charitable donations. win win

Those spirit trials were my absolute favorite part of the game! They got my blood pumping and I couldn't wait for the next one every time. I've replayed them over and over in the Boss Rush mode. Funny that they bothered you. I didn't mind the dowsing stuff, either, but I can't say it was anything great.

I Just bought this bundle myself... and trust me, if you are a fan of classic video games, it is well worth the money (that you literally choose to pay for it [you even get to choose how much of what you choose to pay goes to charity, which is incredible]).

On top of that, even if you are a naif in regards to playing games on a PC because you don't want to have to buy expensive video cards and crazy amounts of RAM and all of that... these games will run on your system.

A pro tip: Invest in a little 15 dollar logitech PC gamepad, if you choose to get these games. The software that comes with the gamepad allows you to assign any keyboard letter/number to any button on the gamepad... so even games that don't have in-game gamepad support are playable with a gamepad. Unlike my shitty and borderline religious view that FPS games should always be played with a mouse/keyboard... I also believe that any old-school platformer/sidescrolling game should never be played on a keyboard.

edit: I now have two extra copies of super meat boy on the steam system... so if any of you think you'd be into an incredibly difficult, old-school super mario bros.-esque platformer, let me know and I'll hook you up.

I admire the spirit trials for their intensity - grabbing one of those red orbs at the last second as a group of guardians surround you is an insane rush - but I just don't have any fun playing through them. It's so frustrating to spend ten minutes carefully gathering the orbs only to realize you can't find the last one and then get killed and have to do it all over again. Maybe if I were actually good at it I'd enjoy it but I struggle through each one and as they get tougher, I just feel more and more frustrated that I'm forced to do this thing that feels so disconnected from the rest of the game. It reminds me of that tower you had to keep returning to in the Phantom Hourglass which was something that bothered me so much I couldn't finish the game.

I hate sounding so negative about Skyward Sword because I really do love it. It's worth playing for that time traveling pirate ship dungeon alone.

Man, I don't feel like doing anything at work today, I just want to shout in people's faces, "I'M THE MOTHERFUCKING ARCH-MAGE OF WINTERHOLD, BITCH!" and then throw a double-handed fireball at their face.

Monty, if you end up hating it and wanting to get rid of it, I'll buy it off of you (as long as it's for 360). I bought it and gave it to my brother in law after like two weeks as a present for not being an asshole all the time... and now I want it back...I just redboxed it for 4 days... PM me if you get sick of it.

I love being an arch mage, but why is the reward a fucking hippie poncho? I've run around for 40 hours looking like I just ripped down a bongload.

Funny you should mention hippie poncho because I'm constantly BURNING MANs...

    ...i'm sorry, everyone.

But seriously, I actually like how it looks, I've switched from FPS camera view to Third Person to see it swaying in the breeze behind me. Plus, that hippie poncho plus the crazy mask of the guy you killed to get the Staff of Magnus makes Magicka regenerate 200% faster. I'd be willing to look far more ridiculous for that. Steady shootin' fireballz.

    Love this game.

I agree with this. I use 1st person view so it doesn't both me, but my dark elf mage is ugly as hell and has to wear ugly clothes because they are the best. It makes me wish I had played as a warrior or a thief.
Also anyone have any suggestions for followers?
I have Mjoll and she is the most annoying follower ever, repeating the same 3 statements constantly. I used to have the chick from Whiterun but I got sick of her attitude when I gave her shit to carry '(sigh) i'm bound to carry your burden'. I let her die. I want a follower who won't annoy me and is powerful.

I had Lydia for a while but then one day she started getting attacked by a Sabre Cat and I threw fireballs at it and she ran away and I never found her again.

Right now I have Benor, who becomes a follower after you beat him in a fistfight. He's a big ass dude who favors an axe. He's a perfect partner for my purposes, because he gets up in opponents' faces and distracts them while I blast them with a fireball. Only down-side is he scares easily, and if we're fighting a boss, he'll run away and cower and I'm on my own. But as soon as I start taking fire from the boss he rejoins the fight and distracts him. Then it's fireball time.

Oh, also, I totally just call him Boner.

Things you find funnier than you probably should

I have a question for everyone who is crazy about Skyrim right now. I just got a 360 so I'm way behind on a lot of good games that have been released. Because I am cheap, I've been buying used games left & right based on old recommendations in this thread (Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, Dead Rising, The Simpsons, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Battlefield). I don't dislike RPGs but haven't played many, should I pick up Elder Scrolls: Oblivion or skip it and just try Skyrim*? Are they similar or did the series change and improve drastically from one game to the next?

*probably in 2016 when it is used and cheap.

I liked Oblivion for about 10 hours, but I've played Skyrim close to 40 at this point. If you're not a big fan of RPG's, Skyrim is a much easier entry in my opinion. I have never, ever been able to stick with an RPG until Skyrim and Mass Effect came out. Also, the story is just a bunch of McGuffins anyways.

On another note, I finally got a chance to play Dead Island and I actually really like it. I thought I was going to hate it, but wanted to give it a shot. I was talking to Arch last night and he said "It's basically zombie Skyrim" and that seemed like a dead on description of it to me. First person, tons of quests, skill trees... It has a pretty good vibe to it, kind of always on the verge of getting killed. The voice acting is embarrassingly bad though, I picked the black guy as my character and I feel bad every time he speaks. It's like Alec Baldwin doing Tracy Morgan.

There's lots of fun stuff in Oblivion. And you can get the game of the year edition with all the DLC for like 10 bucks on the 360 these days.

Skyrim is better, but Oblivion is a lot of fun and a great introduction to the world of Morrowind. Even if you just get 10 hours out of it that's 1 dollar per hour fun!

I'm a PC gamer but got a 360 recently cause it was on sale

So I am in the same boat of looking to pick up older games cheap. It's fun. I'm excitedly waiting to get a copy of Deadly Premonition from a co-worker.

Deadly Premonition is something else indeed. Anyone here played it?

I found it to be a huge pain in the ass, no vendors would deal with me and all npcs were terrified of me. I also found the vampirism cure a real chore to achieve.
Are there not similar repercussions to being a werewolf? If not then maybe I'll just wolf it up.

I skipped out on vampirism in Obilivion because nighttime in these games is annoying and I didn't want to play just then, so I can't say what vampirism was like, but being a wolf is unnoticeable so far in Skyrim, other than rest. I have never used my Beast Form ability, so maybe thats good, maybe not. but so far (50+ hours as a werewolf), its a non-factor.

Re: This is the new games thread

I get really pissed when there's a new Skyrim bug patch on the 360 and it doesn't fix one of several bugs I'm dealing with. I can't finish the Winterhold quests and my friends are constantly talking about the end of that shit. The spoilers are too much! Ugh! Fix your damn quest bugs, you fucks!

Skip Oblivion. I love it to shit, and the depth is massive, but Skyrim is just better. The accessibility is indeed the main reason. I love playing in third person, and the camera is greatly improved for this. In Oblivion regardless of 1st or 3rd person you got sucked into a 1st person view every time you talked to someone. Some of the faces in the game were skeevily rendered, and you'd be walking down the street in glorious, dissociative 3rd person, when all of a sudden an urgent minded lizard man would run up to you and his face would fill your television. It would get EXTREMELY off putting. The Shivering Isles expansion was awesome, for instance, but you couldn't walk down a path without a deformed crazy person screaming at you, their horrible nightmare fuel eyeballs crammed into view. It made me nauseous in its awkwardness, and this is maybe the tiniest of gameplay problems. Too bad, the writing was pretty impressive and the possibilities fun to explore.

What's the cheapest, fastest way to get an Xbox 360? Are there any stores that still rent consoles? Or failing that, can I rent a badass computer for a few days?

Because I really want to try Skyrim, but my computer isn't powerful enough and I don't own any current-gen consoles.
    I'm in.
