    Moving to SF

At the end of July, I am officially being kicked out of my welfare-bound state. I have deliberating this for long enough, and so I have made the decision to move to S.F, to better pursue my delusion comedy dreams in late July-early August. I can get down there, feed myself, I will probably have a day job waiting for me as well, but the trick comes in finding a place to squat for about a week or less or slightly more until I can find an apartment. That is why I turn to you, AST members. My load will be as light as I can make it (two bags, and I'll have some luggage too. http://instantrimshot.com. I'm dying inside.) I'll just need a couch or a floor, I can provide everything else. (Yes, I know a place to shower).

If you live in San Fransisco, then this is for you. If you happen to have a big heart to let a person sleep in your dwelling, or if you're just one more lonely night away from ending it all, then by all means send me a PM. Thank you.

Sweet (the moving to SF part, not the need a place to sleep, dying inside part).

You wouldn't want to stay out in the sticks where I am, but I'll definitely make inquiries of cool people I know in the city.
Hey, check me out. I'm a ghost.

    Re: Moving to SF

I'm sorry that I'm unable to help, but I do have a suggestion...there is a San Francisco board on Yahoo with quite a few members. Sign up and post the message there as well to cast as wide a net as possible.

It's under Yahoo Groups, titled SFComedy.

Sorry again that I can't help out with a place to crash. But hopefully somebody here can hook you up. When I moved here about a year and a half ago I hit AST for some help and everybody really came through with advice, suggestions on neighborhoods and even places to eat. Meen especially seems to know every burrito place everywhere.

    Re: Moving to SF

Once again, sorry I can't help out with a place to crash, but I glanced at the Yahoo board...hopefully you've found somebody with a spare couch, but in regards to the comments about NEEDING a car, initially you'll be fine. There's lots of spots within the city and accessible by BART that you'll be fine. Also, I know plenty of comics who don't own a car and manage to get by and still regularly stop by places like Sunnyvale, San Jose and even out in Pleasanton. Yes, it's more convenient to own your own car, but that also means paying for it and dealing with parking. My wife and I are lucky enough to have a space included in our rent, but I barely drive the thing, and out of all the standup I do I've used the car possibly 0.09% of the time to get there. That's being overly mathematical about it, but the only reason you'd need a car is if you lived waaaaay out in the sticks far away from a BART terminal.

I'm not moving there, but I'll be in Marin County July 1st - 5th for work and we'll probably end up in SF at night looking for things to do.

Can someone clue me in on the good local eateries? Record stores? Thanks.

Gimme some more to go on. What's yer budget? What kind of food do you like? What neighborhood will you be in?

Record store is easy. Amoeba on Haight.

Hmm... No real budget to speak of. I'd rather not spend an ass-ton of cash, but I'm not necessarily trying to limit my spending. I'm not much for "fine dining", although I'm not opposed to going somewhere like that*. I'd rather get down and dirty with some ribs or hot wings or something. I somehow doubt that I'll find good BBQ in SF.

I'm not sure about the neighborhood. I'm working as a technical director for a kids magician that's performing at the Marin County Fair and we're planning on heading into SF during the evenings.

*I'm probably gonna look on the Bravo site and see if any of the Top Chef contestants have restaurants there 'cause I'm a dork like that.

Not that anyone was waiting for me to weigh in on this, but CaptainBreakfast is a good guy (and a very funny comic) and if he were moving to my town instead of away from it, I would strongly consider renting even a couch to him. I think he'll be an incredible addition to the San Francisco scene, and anyone who's looking for a friendly, conscientious, funny guy to rent a room from them should get in touch with him.

Go to Big Nate's (should be able to find it on Yelp). Kickass barbecue, and there's a good chance you'll get to see Nate Thurmond, one of the 50 greatest NBA players ever.

Star Chef's restaurants in SF -

Absinthe - Jamie (blonde, likes girls)
WichCraft - Collichio (the host guy)
    Coco500 - Jennifer (season 4, faux-hawk)
Circa - Erik (season 4, looked like a biker dude)

    Some others:
Chez Pannise, Berkeley - Alice Waters (World renowned and shit)
Incanto - Chris Cosentino (2nd Runner up to become next Iron Chef)
    Michael Mina - Super famous/expensive
Gary Danko - See Michael Mina
Slanted Door - Charles Phan (Maybe most recognized Vietnamese chef in the country)
Citizen Cake - Elizabeth Faulkner (World renowned pastry chef and Iron Chef contestant)
Jardiniere - Traci Des Jardins (Iron chef competitor)

    Cheap food:
Burrito - El Farolito (the one at 4817 Mission) or CanCun on Mission
Falafel - Truly Mediterranean on 16th near Valencia
Hot dog - Rosamunde Sausage on Haight
    Pizza - Arinell on Valencia
Hey, check me out. I'm a ghost.

    Re: Moving to SF

Thanks, guys. I'm really looking forward to the trip. I thought that Jamie (Top Scallop) had a place out there, but I still haven't gotten around to checking the "Top Chef" site for other chef's restaurants. I'll definitely hit up Collichio's place and maybe one of the others.

Also, thanks for the cheap-eats suggestions too. I probably can't really afford to spend most of my money in the more expensive places. Gotta save some coin for Amoeba.
