    Re: Moonrise Kingdom

The irony is that recent ads for this (airing on Comedy Central) have been hyping Bruce Willis and Bill Murray when they are barely in the thing. The no-name kids are the real stars. I liked it — peaked in the second act… but I was once a Boy Scout and liked teenage girls, so it resonated for me. Lots of great Benjamin Britten choral music. Put that quote in your TV spots!

I had the pleasure of getting to see it with a big group of friends who were just as excited as I was. We all walked out raving about it. I can't wait to see it a second time. And a third. Etcetera.

I think I laughed hardest at:

Finally saw this tonight and was completely disappointed. Every thing about it felt hollow. It didn't make me laugh once. I even thought that most of the acting was just bad. I loved the soundtrack (DUH. Randall Poster is a fucking WIZARD.) and all of the 60s eyewear was wicked. Aside from that, felt done to death. Which is hard for me to admit, as a colossal Wes Anderson fan.

Oh well. They can't all be Rushmore.

Alec, I laughed hardest at a Bill Murray line.

    Re: Moonrise Kingdom

Even though Anderson is probably never going to make a movie like "Rushmore" again, this was still a really good movie and probably one of the best, if not the best, so far this year. I mean, people can accuse him of having a particular style and way of doing things that he does over and over again, but if your style is "being good" it's kind of hard to complain. He knows what he's doing; every shot, every composition, every piece of bric a brac in the frame is there for a reason. He doesn't make movies because he wants to make money, he just does them because he has good stories to tell. Ten years ago, that was commonplace, now not so much, so when a movie is different at all now it stands out.

Top Ten List So Far This Year: 1) Moonrise Kingdom 2) Cabin in the Woods 3) 21 Jump Street 4) Wanderlust 5) Bernie

    Re: Moonrise Kingdom

I am a huge WA fan. I love his conventions and I love his humor. I have ZERO problem with him cultivating a style and sticking to that style. Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums are two of my all-time favorite films. But his incredible meticulousness and singularity of vision were not enough for me this time. I found the story very shallow and -- for the first time ever -- contrived. Maybe I'm too jaded to appreciate what he was doing...I hope that's not the case. For me, the Richie/Margot romance has infinitely more heart. With these kids, I just wasn't buying it.

I haven't read anything negative about this movie so far. Not even twice.

    I thought it was great.

How were you not all totally distracted by Charlyne Yi's character?

I was all "Oh, perfectly capturing what it's like to be an ostracized youth again, that's REAL original." And then I was "Crying like 5 times during the movie, totally groundbreaking, ME." And to lady in the lobby afterwards who asked if I was ok because eyes were blooshot - yeah, THAT'S never been done before.

    Typical quirky Wes shit.
